Truc Bach Lake - poetic beauty in the heart of the capital
According to the book "Tay Ho Chi", Truc Bach Lake existed in the 17th century when people from two villages, Yen Hoa (now Yen Phu) and Yen Quang (now Quan Thanh Street, Ba Dinh District) built a dike to block the southeast corner of West Lake to raise fish. During the reign of Lord Trinh Giang (1729 - 1740), the Lord took a piece of land located south of the lake in Truc Yen village to build a palace as a place of retreat, called Truc Lam Vien. However, only a few years later, the palace became a cold palace to imprison guilty palace maids. The palace maids had to weave silk to earn a living and the silk they weaved became famous throughout the region, called "Truc village silk", or "Truc bach". Since then, the part of the lake that was separated from Truc Yen village was also called Truc Bach lake. In the second year of Chieu Thong (1788), King Le Chieu Thong burned down the entire palace of Lord Trinh, and Truc Lam Vien was also burned to ashes. Most tourists when coming to Hanoi visit Truc Bach Lake because around the lake there are many historical relics and unique architectural works. In the southwest corner of the lake is Quan Thanh Temple (Thanh Nien Street) - one of the four towns of Thang Long; in the east are Than Quang Pagoda (Ngu Xa Street) and Chau Long Pagoda (Chau Long Street) built during the Tran Dynasty; in the northeast is An Tri Temple (Pho Duc Chinh Street); on a small island in the north of the lake is a stone stele recording the history of Cau Nhi Temple. Around Truc Bach Lake are planted many kinds of trees, dotted with pretty flower gardens and cool green grass carpets. Coming to Truc Bach Lake, visitors can sit and sip a cup of coffee at the lakeside shops; row a boat, pedal a duck to admire the lake view or stroll on Thanh Nien Street, shaded by pink phoenix flowers and purple lagerstroemia to let their souls drift with the lake water and the wind.
