With just over two weeks left until the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, the atmosphere at many flower and ornamental plant shops remains quite subdued. Unlike previous years when garden owners busily imported seedlings and prepared their stock from the beginning of the twelfth lunar month, this year, many shops are cautiously observing the market. Fluctuations in purchasing power and concerns about risks are preventing them from boldly importing new varieties of flowers and ornamental plants, as any changes could impact Tet holiday shopping demand.
Having been in the ornamental plant business for over 6 years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Duyen's Hai Son flower shop (Long An ward, Tay Ninh province) is familiar with many types of plants such as periwinkle, pansy, lucky bamboo, marigold, hydrangea, bougainvillea, roses, etc. During Tet (Lunar New Year), the shop usually imports marigolds and chrysanthemums, and this year has added money plant - a type of ornamental plant that is currently popular with consumers.

In previous years, at this time, Ms. Duyen would have imported large quantities of goods to meet market demand. This year, however, she decided to "wait" to conduct a more thorough market survey before adjusting her product offerings. "I consider my purchases carefully, and so do others. I plan to import goods around mid-December, closely following market demand. For now, I'll sell gradually and see if things improve in the future," Ms. Duyen shared.
Ms. Duyen added that in recent days, the store has imported some early-blooming chrysanthemum pots from people in Vinh Long , mainly to "rescue" and support farmers. "This year, unseasonal rains combined with sudden weather changes have caused the plants to grow quickly, shortening their development cycle and blooming early," Ms. Duyen said.
Unlike some shops that are more cautious, S-Xanh Ornamental Plant Shop (Tan Ninh Ward) proactively prepares its stock early. The shop develops a plan to import, select, and display a diverse range of ornamental plants for Tet (Lunar New Year). Traditional flower varieties are displayed scientifically in separate areas, making them convenient for care and easy for customers to browse and choose from.
These days, the shop focuses on intensive care, closely monitoring the growth of each plant to ensure that the flowers bloom on time, have beautiful colors, and maintain consistent quality when they reach consumers. Technical measures such as adjusting watering, fertilization, and providing shade according to the weather are flexibly applied to improve product quality in the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year).
Sharing his thoughts on the market, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, owner of S-Xanh Ornamental Plant Shop, said: “This year, the shop has prepared many traditional flower varieties for Tet, with the main focus being chrysanthemums, cockscomb, marigolds, and some other Tet ornamental plants such as money tree and red poinsettia.” According to Mr. Tuan, in the early part of the season, customers are mainly cafes and shops that need to decorate early, focusing on popular flowers such as chrysanthemums, marigolds, and hanging flowers like petunias.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the Tet holiday market for flower growers and vendors, the atmosphere in the nurseries remains bustling with activity as they carefully tend to each potted plant. Everyone is hoping for a bountiful harvest and a prosperous and warm Tet holiday.
