Group L My Son is located on the top of a small hill about 75m south of the central tower groups B, C, D. Since the beginning of the 20th century, researcher Henri Parmentier (French Institute of the Far East) has recorded the site of Group L as a long, tiled room with two opposite opening doors. The first excavation conducted by the CM Lerici Foundation (Italy) in 2019 recorded an additional architectural foundation located to the west of the long room L, archaeologists named the previously discovered structure L1 and the later discovered foundation L2. Both L1 and L2 are located on the architectural axis in the East-West direction and have surrounding walls.

On May 6, 2025, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1263 allowing the My Son World Cultural Heritage Management Board to coordinate with the Institute of Monuments Conservation, the Institute of Archaeology and the CM Lerici Foundation to continue the second archaeological excavation in Group L, from May 9, 2025 to July 30, 2025, with an excavation area of 150m².

The second excavation expanded the survey area of Group L to include the eastern hillside to collect more data on the Group L area, especially clarifying the brick wall structures surrounding the L1 and L2 structures. At the same time, continuing to study and classify the roof tile morphology of the L1 and L2 structures as well as related ceramic artifacts; removing collapsed parts both inside and outside the L1 structure, completing the final drawings for the project proposal for the preservation and restoration of the architectural components in Group L.

Excavations have uncovered many pieces of pottery and various types of roof tiles lying on the ground and walkways around L1. The dissection work also revealed the destruction caused by nature and bombs during the war. The wooden roof structure and tile roof collapsed in the early stages and the walls collapsed later mainly due to bombs during the war.

From the initial results, archaeologists determined that the L architectures date back quite late, around the 13th century, and could have been used until the early 14th century. This is the first time that the architectural dating has been more clearly determined based on the excavation results achieved.

At the workshop, experts and researchers all agreed that the remaining brick architecture and structural components in Group L need to be stabilized to overcome the effects of time and war. The entire area of Group L needs to be protected in its entirety.

According to Mr. Nguyen Cong Khiet - Deputy Director in charge of the My Son World Cultural Heritage Management Board, the excavation results and new discoveries in Group L have contributed to identifying the value of late architecture at the My Son World Heritage, expanding the architectural space of temples and towers and creating a research attraction for the community in the coming time.

“The value of the L tower group announced after excavation is a new discovery, proving that the heritage site still has many unique values contained underground. The unit is interested in promoting the value of the L tower area after excavation, wishing to turn this place into an archaeological excavation tourist attraction, so that visitors have the opportunity to admire a My Son not only with the values existing above ground but also containing the cultural depth underground” – Mr. Nguyen Cong Khiet shared.
