"It was a surprise that ASEAN All Stars could win against Man Utd," midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc shared with the media on the afternoon of May 29.
Man Utd started their Asian tour with a match against ASEAN All Stars at Bukit Jalil Stadium, Malaysia. Coach Ruben Amorim kept his promise by fielding many key players such as Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro and Andre Onana. In the first half, Man Utd played well but still struggled as they often do in the Premier League.
In the second half, coach Kim Sang-sik sent a series of Vietnamese players such as Nguyen Hoang Duc, Nguyen Van Vi and Do Duy Manh onto the field. Hoang Duc showed a difference in the midfield. He helped the ASEAN All Stars play more flexibly, especially when Casemiro left the field. The young Man Utd player did not play very impressively against an experienced opponent.
In the 71st minute, Segecic (Australia) made a great pass to Maung Maung Lwin (Myanmar) for this striker to shoot past goalkeeper Tom Heaton. The Southeast Asian team coordinated the ball very well in the middle of the field with the participation of Hoang Duc and Van Vi before suddenly accelerating. At the end of the match, Man Utd tried to find an equalizer but failed.
"In the morning, we just joked that it was the first time the Southeast Asian players met a big team. We only had 2 days of training together, it was a surprise to beat Man Utd. We only had a few days and came from many different countries. There were many languages we didn't know, we couldn't communicate. The players tried to exchange cultures with each other, this was very fun," midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc added.
Many fans believe that Man Utd can completely think about recruiting stars like Hoang Duc, Hai Long... However, the Vietnamese player himself said that he only tried to contribute a beautiful match to serve the audience. Playing in the Premier League is something that cannot be said at the present time.
