According to AFP , the account of the Imperial Household Agency (IHA) of Japan was made public last week, but was set to private until April 1st. The account has over 160,000 followers. However, it does not follow any other accounts.
According to AFP , the first 19 posts by the Japanese Imperial Family on Instagram were photos and videos of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako performing their royal duties at recent events.
An IHA spokesperson confirmed that, by engaging on social media, the organization hopes to attract the attention of younger generations to what the royal family does.
Reacting to the Japanese imperial family joining Instagram, one social media user wrote: "The imperial family is on Instagram. I thought it was an April Fool's joke."
Another person shared: "When I found out the royal family used an Instagram account, I quickly checked it out."
Emperor Naruhito ascended the throne in 2019 in a ceremony steeped in tradition after his father abdicated.
Around the world , other royal families also use social media accounts, for example, the British royal family.
