The 43rd animated film about robotic cats earned 100 billion VND, becoming the highest-grossing anime film of all time in Vietnamese theaters. On the evening of June 2, the work achieved a record after 10 days of release, breaking the record of Conan: Black Submarine, released in 2023, which earned 96 billion VND.
According to independent box office monitoring site Box Office Vietnam, Doraemon: Nobita and the Symphony of the Earth led ticket sales this weekend. On June 2, the film earned nearly VND8 billion, double the second-placed film Garfield: Super Naughty Cat - a popular Hollywood animation brand.
The appeal of Doraemon pushed Ly Hai's Lat Mat 7 down to third place (VND3.2 billion). Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder of Box Office, said Doraemon achieved a high occupancy rate because it was shown in early summer and was chosen by many parents and schools for their children's entertainment.
Directed by Kazuaki Imai, the film celebrates the 90th birthday of author Fujiko Fujio. Nobita practices playing the flute for a school concert but is ridiculed by his friends for his poor performance. However, the sound reaches a mysterious girl named Micca. Micca invites Doraemon, Nobita and their friends to Farre Castle, where music turns into energy. Meanwhile, they discover a mysterious force plotting to erase music, forcing the group to save the world.
Recently, many animated works have created a buzz and high revenue. In March, Kungfu Panda 4 earned 135 billion VND, entering the top 5 highest-grossing films at the Vietnamese box office since the beginning of the year. Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai - director of content at CGV cinema complex - commented that recent films of this genre have not been restricted by age when shown domestically, are suitable for Vietnamese culture, and are chosen by many families to enjoy.
In the near future, Vietnamese cinemas will witness a series of animated projects hitting the box office during the summer movie season. After Doraemon, Inside Out 2 - a Disney/Pixar project - will return in mid-June, predicted to be a hit thanks to the first part that created a buzz in 2015. Despicable Me 4 will be released in early July, continuing the story of Gru (Steve Carrell) when the villain Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) escapes from prison and plans revenge.
Doraemon comics tell the story of a robotic cat born in the 22nd century, returning to the 20th century to help Nobita - a clumsy elementary school student - escape from awkward situations. In addition to everyday stories, Doraemon, Nobita and his friends Suneo, Shizuka, and Jaian also have many thrilling adventures. Doraemon has won many comic awards in Japan and was voted by Time Asia magazine as one of 22 outstanding characters of Asia.
