On November 29, the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association , the Center for Journalism Training - Vietnam Journalists Association in collaboration with Google News Initiative organized a training program: "Improving digital skills for reporters".
Journalist Tran Trong Dung, Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association in charge of the South, delivered the opening speech.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, journalist Tran Trong Dung, Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association in charge of the South, affirmed that in the context of the 4.0 industrial revolution, digital transformation is an inevitable path for all press agencies if they do not want to be "eliminated".
“This transformation not only helps the press become more professional, modern and humane, but also improves the effectiveness of information and propaganda, serving the country’s innovation cause and orienting public opinion. At the same time, digital transformation helps increase reader experience, personalize content, create new sources of revenue, and maintain information sovereignty in cyberspace,” said Mr. Dung.
The program attracted more than 100 journalists to participate.
The training course provides more in-depth knowledge of information technology, helping journalists easily access and exploit digital tools. Specifically, the training course will provide tools to help generate creative ideas, support searching and verifying information quickly and accurately.
In addition, there are tools applied to build more vivid and attractive multimedia stories. In addition to theory, each lesson also includes discussion and practice, creating opportunities for students to exchange experiences, share perspectives and immediately apply the knowledge they have acquired.
The training program had the participation of lecturers: Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nhat, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus Newspaper; Journalist Vu The Cuong, Lecturer of the Academy of Journalism & Communication and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Duong, Manager of Strategic Cooperation of News & Publishing Industry, Southeast Asia, Google.
Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nhat, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus Newspaper, shares about the steps to implement data journalism.
Sharing at the training class, journalist Nguyen Hoang Nhat, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus Newspaper, shared about Google Trends for reporters. Accordingly, in the work of producing news articles, when wanting to report on new topics or topics that are heavy on data but do not have updated information, reporters can seek the support of Google Trends in extracting news and providing reference information. In addition, Google can also suggest to reporters new ideas, news angles and news values.
However, the press is still a legitimate and reliable source of information, even when digital technology is increasingly used. If reporters know how to apply digital technology to develop their professional work, it will bring opportunities to "renew themselves" in the digital age.
Along with that, Mr. Nhat also shared that to carry out data journalism, it is necessary to go through the steps from data collection, data filtering, data analysis to data visualization. In particular, the expert believes that data analysis is very important and is the most complicated step of data journalism.
Journalist Vu The Cuong, Lecturer at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, shares at the training class
Meanwhile, journalist Vu The Cuong, a lecturer at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, who has more than 20 years of experience in the journalism industry, assessed that Google has played an important role in supporting Vietnamese journalists in accessing information search tools and data verification.
"Since Google was born, we have begun to realize the power of search engines. However, using them to serve the press does not stop at searching capabilities but also must ensure transparency, professional ethics and information quality," Mr. Cuong emphasized.
In particular, he mentioned Google Search and other tools that help journalists verify information quickly and ensure the accuracy of content before publishing. This is considered one of the important factors to protect reputation and professional ethics in the context of increasingly popular fake news.
Journalist Vu The Cuong emphasized that technology does not replace journalists but is a tool to help them work more effectively. Using technology properly will determine the quality and influence of journalism in the future.
Journalists exchanged enthusiastically at the training session.
With useful and rich content, the training session attracted many lively discussions from journalists, lecturers and technology experts from Google. Journalists also hope that the Vietnam Journalists Association will continue to organize many high-quality training programs to update and improve digital skills for reporters in the digital age.
