The Management Board of Con Dao National Park (Ba Ria - Vung Tau) has just received the Heritage Tree title and the Hon Trung Bird Sanctuary Record Certificate.
On November 29, Mr. Nguyen Khac Pho, Director of the Management Board of Con Dao National Park (Con Dao district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) said that the Vietnam Record Organization has just awarded the Certificate of Hon Trung record as the seabird sanctuary with the highest breeding density in Vietnam to the Management Board of Con Dao National Park.

According to Mr. Pho, Hon Trung is an important small island of Con Dao National Park, with an area of nearly 2 hectares, deserted, with only grass and rocks. However, this place has become the habitat and breeding ground of many rare bird species such as: Black-backed Tern, Large-crested Tern, White-bellied Budgerigars, White-breasted Swifts, Grey-headed Terns... The average surveyed egg density is 4.88 eggs/m2.

In addition, the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment has awarded certificates of recognition for 24 Heritage Trees to the Con Dao National Park Management Board. Including 1 Banyan tree at Hon Bay Canh (237 years old, 7m in circumference, 17m high); 1 Banyan tree at Ong Dung Beach (155 years old, 4.6m in circumference, 14m high); 1 Black Star tree at Bai Dai Beach (237 years old, 7.9m in circumference, 25m high) and a group of 21 Phong Ba trees at Hon Cau (119 years old, largest circumference 274m). Thus, up to now, the whole Con Dao district (Ba Ria-Vung Tau) has 105 Heritage Trees, including: Banyan, Lagerstroemia, Thi, Nhoi, Coc Do... "This is a testament to the efforts of the Con Dao National Park Management Board in preserving and promoting the value of natural heritage, raising awareness of sustainable environmental protection", said the Director of the Con Dao National Park Management Board.
Con Dao National Park has 1,077 plant species, belonging to 640 genera, of 160 families of vascular plants, in 6 phyla; 155 animal species belonging to 64 families, 26 orders including 25 mammal species, 85 bird species, 32 reptile species and 13 frog species... Con Dao National Park's forest vegetation is typical of the tropical island forest ecosystem, expressed through the ecosystems of evergreen broadleaf forests, semi-deciduous broadleaf forests, bamboo forests and coastal mangrove forests. Along with the conservation of natural forest ecosystems on the island, scientific research and conservation of some plant species have also been interested and focused on over the past decades, research and application topics such as: planting mangrove forests on sand and dead corals on some islands; reforestation after storm Linda 1997; Research on ecological characteristics and propagation of the Red Coc tree (an endangered, rare plant species) found for the first time in Con Dao National Park... and many other conservation and research projects. Besides conservation and scientific research, Con Dao National Park also focuses on preserving and promoting the value of woody trees, most of which are ancient trees, have existed for a long time and contain great values in culture, education , history, society, ecology... |
