The movement is vibrant and opens up many opportunities for development.
According to Mr. Duong Minh Quang, Chairman of the Gia Lai Provincial Chess Federation, chess possesses many advantages for strong development in the current period. It is an intellectual sport with high popular appeal, suitable for many age groups, and has a strong potential for community connection.
It is noteworthy that, in the past, despite the lack of systematic investment, the chess training movement in Gia Lai was maintained and developed thanks to the dedication of individuals, clubs, and chess enthusiasts at the grassroots level.
These events have been regularly organized, helping to keep the movement alive for many years. Many units have not only participated in friendly matches but have also boldly entered national-level tournaments and achieved encouraging results.

A prime example is the Diep Suong Chess Club (Phu Cat commune), headed by Mr. Tran Trong Thuy. Operating since 2018, the Diep Suong Club has gradually become a familiar destination for chess players nationwide, attracting many strong players from Hanoi , Thanh Hoa, and Ho Chi Minh City for friendly matches. Through tournaments organized by the club itself, the unit proactively selects outstanding players to participate in the annual National Team Chess Championship, affirming its professional standing in the national chess community.
In addition, the An Khe Chess Club (An Khe ward), the Quy Nhon Chess Club (Quy Nhon ward), and the Tchess Club (Quy Nhon Nam ward)... regularly organize tournaments and exchange activities to create more opportunities for young chess players, contributing to maintaining the development of the movement.
Mr. Ho Van Thanh - Chairman of the An Khe Chess Club (An Khe Ward) - shared: “With the existing foundation of the movement, I hope the Federation will organize more activities and tournaments so that clubs in the province have the opportunity to connect, exchange experiences, and improve their professional quality; thereby contributing to the stronger development of the chess movement in Gia Lai province.”
A strong movement is essential for a strong team.
Experience shows that for any sport to develop strongly and deeply, building a solid foundation for the movement is a prerequisite. The same applies to chess; to have a force capable of competing at the national level, a strong training system and a robust mass movement are essential.
Looking back at recent national youth competitions, Gia Lai's athlete pool lacks the depth to compete for medals with strong teams like Ho Chi Minh City or the Army. This shortage of talent indicates that the youth training movement still has many limitations and needs to be re-evaluated in a more systematic way.

Mr. Diep Chan Vuong, Vice President of the Gia Lai Provincial Chess Federation, stated: “In the coming time, the Federation will focus on expanding the network of clubs, aiming for at least one stable club operating in each area of the province. Along with that, training for coaches and referees will also be organized to standardize expertise according to the standards of the Vietnam Chess Federation.”
Along with strengthening the organizational system, the Federation has identified the development of chess in schools as a strategic solution. Accordingly, the Federation will enhance coordination with the Education sector to develop chess in a professional direction, through organizing annual tournaments with appropriate recognition of the achievements and contributions of the grassroots movement. Through this, it will discover, select, and nurture talents for high-performance sports in the province.

Chairman of the Gia Lai Provincial Chess Federation, Duong Minh Quang, stated: “Our immediate task is to continue strengthening the organization and expanding the membership of the Federation. We hope that the clubs currently operating in the province will work together to build a strong chess movement in the province, contributing outstanding athletes to national and international competitions.”
Furthermore, chess is expected to become a part of promoting local culture and tourism by integrating the organization of tournaments and exchange activities with the introduction of the image, people, and cultural identity of Gia Lai to friends and tourists.”
