The theme of World Patient Safety Day 2025 is “Patient Safety from the Start” with the slogan “Patient Safety from the Start” to highlight the importance of ensuring children’s safety, starting from the newborn period, in global health care systems. WHO calls for urgent action to eliminate avoidable harm in neonatal and child care, building on the efforts of previous campaigns on “safe births”, “patient safety first”, “ healthcare worker safety”, “medication safety”, “patient and family engagement” and “diagnosis safety”. World Patient Safety Day 2025 aims to drive meaningful improvements and reaffirm every child’s right to safe and quality care.
Every child has the right to safe, quality health care from birth. However, infants and young children face additional risks due to rapid development, changing health needs, and different disease patterns. They rely on adults to speak up and make decisions for them. Children may also face additional challenges depending on their socioeconomic circumstances, such as not being able to access necessary care. These factors make them more vulnerable if care is not tailored to their age, size, health status, and circumstances.
Just a single safety incident can have lifelong consequences for a child’s health and development. That’s why World Patient Safety Day 2025 (17 September) is dedicated to ensuring safe care for every newborn and child, with a particular focus on children from birth to nine years of age. This year’s slogan, “Patient Safety Starts!”, highlights the urgent need to act early and consistently to prevent harm throughout childhood and reap benefits throughout life.
WHO calls on parents, caregivers, health professionals, health care leaders, educators and communities to join forces to prevent avoidable harms in pediatric care and build a safer and healthier future for every child, as part of global efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.
Accordingly, goal 3 includes the following specific targets: by 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to below 70 per 100,000 live births; end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least 25 per 1,000 live births; end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases, and combat hepatitis, waterborne diseases and other communicable diseases; reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by one-third through prevention and treatment, and promote mental health and well-being; Strengthen prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol; ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including family planning, information and education, and integrate reproductive health into national strategies and programmes; significantly reduce death and disease from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution; Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services, and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all.
