The Carpenters' legendary hitmaker dies at 85

(Dan Tri) - Roger Nichols, the man behind many hit songs for the legendary band The Carpenters, has just passed away at the age of 85. He passed away on May 17, but his family only announced it to fans on May 23.

Paul Williams, a longtime associate of Roger Nichols, confirmed the news in a post on his personal page on May 23.

"The first song Roger Nichols and I wrote was called It's Hard to Say Goodbye," he wrote. " Sadly, that's exactly where we are right now.

Roger Nichols passed away peacefully a few days ago at home surrounded by his loved ones. These were his wife, Terry, and his proud daughters, Claire and Caitlin. They were Roger's dreams come true and the greatest joy of his life."

In his article, Paul Williams also shared his memories of the two when they were working together, and the process of turning them into good partners. In Paul's eyes, Roger was a close colleague and his own teacher.

"He was my collaborator for many years and a dear friend. When I was an unemployed actor and looking for a music career, I signed a contract with A&M Records. They were looking for a lyricist for Roger Nichols. It was a lucky and big turning point in my life," Paul wrote.

Paul recalled that he and the legendary musician wrote music together every day for many years. In Paul's memory, Roger was both disciplined and talented. Roger Nichols's passing left many colleagues in the entertainment industry regretful.

Roger Nichols (born 1940) is an American musician. He is also capable of playing many instruments such as violin, guitar, bass and piano. During his career, the legendary musician has collaborated with famous colleagues such as: Paul Williams, Tony Asher and Bill Lane.

He also co-wrote famous works such as: We've Only Just Begun , I Won't Last a Day Without You performed by The Carpenters; the song Times of Your Life performed by Paul Anka; I Never Had It So Good sung by Barbra Streisand.

In addition to his successful music career, Roger Nichols is also a successful jewelry maker. In his personal life, he has been married once and has two daughters.
