The legendary Lucescu has passed away.

Mircea Lucescu, one of the greatest icons of Romanian football, has passed away at the age of 80.

Lucescu's legacy will live on in the hearts of his fans.

According to The Guardian , the information was confirmed by the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital in the early hours of April 8 ( Hanoi time).

Lucescu died just weeks after leading the Romanian national team to the World Cup play-offs, where they faced Türkiye in the semi-finals and lost 0-1. Just days after that defeat, Lucescu resigned after being diagnosed with an arrhythmia following a collapse during training. And now, it has been confirmed that Lucescu has passed away.

Lucescu was not only an outstanding coach but also a talented player in the past. He earned 64 caps for the Romanian national team and captained them at the 1970 World Cup. As a coach, he made a significant mark by leading Romania to qualify for Euro 1984, a historic milestone for Romanian football.

Lucescu's coaching career spanned many countries and major clubs. He won the Turkish league title with Galatasaray in 2002 and went on to win it again with Besiktas just a year later.

However, the pinnacle of his coaching career was undoubtedly his time at Shakhtar Donetsk. During his more than a decade leading the Ukrainian team, he won numerous domestic titles and, most notably, the UEFA Cup in 2009.

Despite being past his prime, Lucescu returned to coach the Romanian national team with a burning desire to lead them back to the World Cup. In recent statements, he affirmed that it was a duty and responsibility to his homeland's football, not for fame or money.
