The International Criminal Court (ICC) begins hearings on former Philippine President Duterte.

(CLO) On February 23, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague officially began preliminary hearings targeting Rodrigo Duterte, the former President of the Philippines.

Duterte is currently facing three charges of crimes against humanity, stemming from the aggressive anti-drug campaigns he directly oversaw during his time in power.

At age 80, Duterte was absent from the hearings after waiving his right to appear. While he was absent, prosecutors began presenting evidence to prove his involvement in dozens of killings within what he called his "war on drugs."

These allegations cover his time as mayor of Davao City in southern the Philippines and his presidency from 2016 to 2022.

This campaign employed extremely harsh drug crackdown measures, resulting in shocking casualty figures. Based on official records from the Philippine government , these law enforcement operations led to the deaths of over 6,000 people.
