Italian media outlets have unanimously confirmed that the former Romanian defender has reached an agreement with Inter's management and is expected to sign a formal contract this week. The decision was made after potential candidates such as Cesc Fabregas (Como) and Patrick Vieira (Genoa) both declined the opportunity to manage the Nerazzurri.
The deal unfolded swiftly. After receiving a call from Inter, Chivu immediately met with Parma's management to request permission to negotiate, as he had a contract until 2026, and they reached an agreement to manage Inter for two seasons. Chivu's great love for his former club was a key factor.
Chivu was an integral part of the club's golden era. He played for the "Nerazzurri" from 2007 to 2014, winning the historic treble (Serie A, Coppa Italia, Champions League) under coach Jose Mourinho in 2010. In total, he won 3 Scudettos, 2 Coppa Italia titles, 2 Italian Super Cups, 1 Champions League title, and 1 FIFA Club World Cup with Inter.
It was at Inter that Chivu retired from playing in 2014. After a stint as an analyst for UEFA, he returned to his "old home" in 2018 to begin his coaching career at youth levels. Chivu gradually established his talent and led Inter's U19 team from 2021 to 2024, notably winning the Italian U19 Championship (Primavera) in 2022.
Last February, Chivu made his first breakthrough in his coaching career when he accepted the offer to manage Parma with the goal of avoiding relegation from Serie A. And Chivu successfully accomplished this task, helping Parma finish the season in 16th place.
The contract signing is expected to take place just 9 days before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup. This will be Chivu's first challenge in his new role, after 13 matches at the highest level with Parma (3 wins, 7 draws, 3 losses). His debut match with Inter will be against Sergio Ramos' Monterrey on June 17th.
