Chivu returns to Inter Milan as head coach. |
Italian media have confirmed that the former Romanian defender has reached an agreement with Inter's board and is expected to sign an official contract this week. The decision was made after potential candidates such as Cesc Fabregas (Como) and Patrick Vieira (Genoa) both turned down the opportunity to lead the black and blue striped team.
The deal happened quickly. After receiving a call from Inter, Chivu immediately met with the Parma board to ask for permission to negotiate because his contract was until 2026 and reached an agreement to lead Inter for 2 seasons. Chivu's great love for his old team was the key factor.
Chivu was an integral part of the club's golden age. Chivu played for the "Nerazzurri" from 2007 to 2014, winning the great treble (Serie A, Coppa Italia, Champions League) under coach Jose Mourinho in 2010. In total, he and Inter won 3 Scudetti, 2 Coppa Italia, 2 Italian Super Cups, 1 Champions League and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.
It was at Inter that Chivu hung up his boots in 2014. After a period as an analyst for UEFA, he returned to his "old home" in 2018 to start his coaching career at youth levels. Chivu gradually asserted his talent and led the Inter U19 team from 2021 to 2024, notably winning the U19 Italian Championship (Primavera) in 2022.
Last February, Chivu had his first breakthrough in his coaching career when he accepted to lead Parma with the goal of staying in Serie A. And Chivu successfully completed this task when helping Parma finish the season in 16th place.
The signing is expected to take place just nine days before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup. This is Chivu’s first challenge in his new role, after 13 matches of top-level experience with Parma (3 wins, 7 draws, 3 losses). His debut with Inter will be against Sergio Ramos’ Monterrey on June 17.
