According to Android Authority , although the iPhone 15 series switched to USB-C and removed the sharp bezels for a slightly curved design, they are still said to resemble the iPhone 12 series. With the upcoming iPhone 16, the design will bring a bigger change as Apple may explore different button and camera layouts, and even add a dedicated camera shutter button to the iPhone.
The images are allegedly design prototypes for the iPhone 16 that Apple is currently working on.
The report is based on pre-production designs of a standard iPhone 16 model internally codenamed DeLorean – the car featured in the popular movie Back to the Future . Based on these details, the report simulates what the iPhone 16 might look like with the various options presented.
First up is the gold iPhone 16 model, which comes with a different camera layout and a casing design similar to what Apple used on the iPhone X. It also features a unified volume button and Action button. The unified volume button was supposed to provide haptic feedback but was removed due to technical issues.
The second iPhone 16 model comes in pink and includes a dedicated Action button, but separates the volume buttons into individual buttons.
Finally, there's the black iPhone 16 model, which comes with a larger Action button and a new Shutter button. The Action button is expected to be capacitive rather than mechanical. This is the design Apple is hoping to use in the final version. On the right is the new Shutter button – an internally developed capacitive button codenamed "Project Nova".
Different perspectives on the iPhone 16 design.
This button is said to have a force sensor in addition to a "haptic switch" function, although its exact meaning is unclear. Judging by its name and location, it's likely the button will be used as a shutter button for the camera. If any problems arise during development, Apple will likely switch to alternative designs that don't include a shutter button.
The report further states that the front of the iPhone 16 will not see any noticeable changes. The product is still in its early stages of development, so there are many options Apple could use at this point. Regardless of the choice, fans are really hoping Apple will create a completely new design for next year's iPhone generation.
