Therefore, AirPods 4 will streamline existing headphone designs. The new headphones are expected to have a redesigned look, a combination of AirPods and AirPods Pro, with a shorter stem. The fit is also expected to be improved, but it's still unclear whether Apple will add silicone ear tips.
The AirPods 4 charging case has also been redesigned, incorporating a speaker to play a sound when locating the device using the Find My app. Additionally, the USB-C charging port will replace the Lightning port. The higher-end version of AirPods 4 will feature active noise cancellation (ANC), a feature currently only available on AirPods Pro.
In an upcoming software update next year, Apple will add hearing aid functionality, allowing AirPods to function as an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid solution, replacing traditional hearing aids. In 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved OTC hearing aid options, paving the way for Apple to market its headphones to the hearing impaired. Gurman said Apple also plans to offer hearing tests.
The next-generation headphones are expected to launch in September next year alongside new iPhone models. Apple is also planning a new version of AirPods Max in 2024.
