On social network Weibo , rumor expert Ice Universe said the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to reach 8.725 mm, thicker than the iPhone 16 Pro Max (8.25 mm).
If the rumors are correct, this would be Apple's thickest iPhone since the iPhone 4s. The 2011 iPhone generation was 9.3 mm thick.
Based on rumors, the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro Max is to accommodate a larger battery. However, Ice Universe did not reveal the detailed battery capacity of the device.
As usual, increased battery capacity does not mean longer battery life. Instead, Apple may increase battery capacity to serve power-hungry features.
Thickness is just one of the design changes on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Many rumors say the product has a new camera cluster, a rectangular protrusion that extends the entire width, while the 3 cameras are still arranged in a triangle.
In addition, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is likely to switch to an aluminum frame. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro use a titanium frame. The back of the device is expected to switch to a new design, combining aluminum and glass.
If you want to own an ultra-thin iPhone, users can wait for a new option this year, temporarily called the iPhone 17 Air.
According to MacRumors , the iPhone 17 Air could be Apple's thinnest smartphone (5.5 mm). The device trades off some features like having only one rear camera and a basic processor. However, Apple hopes the ultra-thin design will be enough to convince users.
In another post, Ice Universe said that the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Air will have the same appearance except for thickness. Both devices are expected to be 163 mm tall, 77.6 mm wide, with a 6.9-inch screen size with 1.15 mm thick bezels.
This leaker has had many accurate rumors in the past, such as the iPhone 13 having a smaller notch, the screen bezel on the iPhone 15 being reduced.
In July 2024, Ice Universe also revealed that the standard iPhone 17 will use an LTPO display panel, which is only available for the iPhone Pro. This means the device can support a 120 Hz refresh rate and always-on mode.
The prices of the devices are likely to remain unchanged, starting at $800 (iPhone 17), $1,100 (iPhone 17 Pro) and $1,200 (iPhone 17 Pro Max). The iPhone 17 Air alone will cost $1,300 .
