Apple added a slew of devices to its list of classic and obsolete products, including iPhones, Mac computers, iPads, and accessories. The 2013 Mac Pro, nicknamed "the trash can," also got a name after 12 years of its launch.
Most Apple products are added to the vintage list very early, five years after they were discontinued, but the 2013 Mac Pro has been on sale for so long that it's only now becoming eligible.
The “trash can” Mac Pro was produced until December 2019, when the “cheese grater” Mac Pro debuted, featuring a more traditional design. The 2013 Mac Pro was the subject of Phil Schiller’s famous “It couldn’t be more innovative” line as he took the stage to a roaring crowd.
However, this statement backfired when the "trash can" revealed many limitations. The Mac Pro had a completely new cylindrical design, much smaller than the previous generation Mac Pro, but ultimately did not meet the needs of professional users.
There is not enough space to upgrade internal components like the GPU, which becomes a major drawback as GPUs continue to grow in size, power, and cooling requirements.
Apple was unable to introduce a new version of the Mac Pro due to design limitations. By 2017, Apple admitted defeat with the 2013 Mac Pro. "I think our design was a bit of a red herring," Apple's hardware chief Craig Federighi said at the time.
Along with the 2013 Mac Pro, Apple also added the 13-inch MacBook Air (2019), iMac (2019), 11-inch iPad Pro (2018), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2018) to the list of classic devices. Notably, the 128GB version of the iPhone 8 was also named, a few months later than the 64GB and 256GB versions.
Additionally, Apple is moving several products from “vintage” to “obsolete,” marking the 7-year mark since they were discontinued, including the 2nd-generation AirPort Express, AirPort Time Capsule 2, and AirPort Extreme 802.11ac.
Products on the vintage list can still be repaired at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider if the necessary parts are available. For “obsolete” machines, Apple will no longer provide repair services, except for battery replacements for some MacBooks manufactured within 10 years if parts are still available.
