Apple plans to release an iPhone SE with a custom-designed 5G modem in 2025, according to analyst Jeff Pu.
Apple's 5G modem will be manufactured by TSMC, Apple's chipmaking partner, Mr. Pu said in a research note with Haitong International Securities on April 11.
About two months ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple had restarted development of the fourth-generation iPhone SE with a 6.1-inch OLED display instead of LCD and an Apple-designed 5G modem.
Kuo said the 5G modem will be manufactured on TSMC's 4nm process and will only support sub-6GHz bands, meaning it won't support super-fast mmWave 5G.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the iPhone SE will enter mass production in the first half of 2024, and Qualcomm CEO also predicted the time for Apple's 5G modem to be 2024. However, Mr. Pu informed that the launch of the next-generation iPhone SE is delayed until 2025.
Apple last introduced the iPhone SE in March 2022. The 4.7-inch device was the last Apple iPhone to feature a Home button and Touch ID. But the iPhone SE 4 will likely feature Face ID, as Kuo said the device will have a similar design to the standard iPhone 14 model.
Apple acquired the majority of Intel's mobile modem business for $1 billion in 2019, in an effort to design its own iPhone modems, a move that would reduce its reliance on Qualcomm.
However, it's unclear whether Apple's modem will offer any benefits to users over Qualcomm's, such as faster 5G performance or improved power efficiency.
There is still a lot of time between now and 2025 and anything can change in a year or so.
