These developments occurred against the backdrop of the US Treasury Department announcing on May 27th that it was imposing new sanctions on the Persian Gulf Strait Authority as part of Operation "Economic Fury." The Office of Foreign Assets Control accused the agency of attempting to impose illegal fees on commercial vessels and forcing them to comply with Iranian directives for safe passage. Washington warned that any organization or individual cooperating with the agency risked sanctions.
Previously, on May 18, Iran announced the establishment of the Persian Gulf Strait Management Authority to coordinate activities in the Strait of Hormuz. This authority asserted that all vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz must coordinate with Iran and obtain permission before transiting.
