According to Aawsat, Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri, a member of the Assembly of Experts – the body responsible for electing Iran's Supreme Leader – announced on March 8 that the selection of a successor to the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had reached a majority consensus, but there were still "some obstacles" that needed to be resolved related to the process.
Earlier, on March 7, a senior cleric in Iran's Assembly of Experts said that members would meet "within a day" to elect a new supreme leader.

Iranian media reported that the panel of experts had minor disagreements over whether their final decision needed to be made after a face-to-face meeting or could be issued without following this procedure.
Meanwhile, Mohsen Heidari Alekasir, another member of the Expert Council, said in a video released by Nournews on March 8 that a face-to-face meeting of the council for a final vote was impossible under the current circumstances.
"It is noteworthy that even our biggest rival has mentioned the name of the chosen successor," Heidari Alekasir said of the chosen successor to Ali Khamenei.
Iranian clerics are known to often refer to the US as their "greatest adversary." A few days ago, US President Donald Trump declared that he could not accept Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as his successor.
Following Iran's announcement, in a post on X, the Israeli military warned that it would pursue anyone who succeeds Ali Khamenei, as well as anyone who seeks to appoint him.
