According to the Times of Israel, Gallant made the statement during a situational assessment meeting at the Northern Command base of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Meanwhile, on the same day, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned of a swift response on the battlefield following the assassination of Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri in southern Beirut. Hezbollah accuses Israel of assassinating Saleh al-Arouri, the highest-ranking Hamas figure killed since the conflict with Israel began on October 7th.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh called on U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is in Türkiye on a week-long Middle East tour, to work to end Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. Haniyeh also urged Arab and Muslim countries to emphasize to the U.S. that stability in the Middle East must be linked to the need to resolve the Palestinian issue. According to plan, in addition to Türkiye, Secretary Blinken will visit Greece and five Arab countries (Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Egypt) before traveling to Israel and the West Bank to try to prevent the regional situation from escalating.

In a related development, Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit also called on the US on January 5 to pressure Israel. According to Gheit, Israel's actions have violated international humanitarian law and a two-state solution is needed to end the conflict. A complete ceasefire and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to provide essential aid to the people of Gaza are urgently necessary. Leaders of Qatar, Lebanon, and Iran also held telephone conversations regarding the escalating tensions in the Gaza Strip.

On January 5th, Martin Griffiths, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), warned that after three months of conflict between Hamas and Israel, Gaza had become uninhabitable and its people were facing daily threats to their lives.
