“The researchers, the AI scientists in China, they are world-class,” Mr. Huang said in a recent interview. He said that just by going to major American AI companies like Anthropic, OpenAI or DeepMind, you can see dozens of researchers from the Asian country.
He repeatedly used the word “extraordinary” when talking about China’s AI talent.

Looking at it as a whole, China is doing “amazing” things in the AI market. Models like DeepSeek and Manus have emerged as challengers to US systems.
“DeepSeek is an absolutely brilliant piece of work,” he continued, praising the Nvidia CEO, who said the challenges posed by international competitors were absolutely necessary for American AI companies to continue to improve.
“People love competition. Companies need competition to inspire themselves, countries need it and there is no reason why we should not promote it,” he stressed.
He also mentioned Huawei – “a formidable company”. “They are a world- class technology company”, he continued.
Still, the head of the world’s largest semiconductor company acknowledged that intense competition could become a problem if U.S. companies don’t have all the resources they need. Building the “ecosystem” needed to support AI is difficult, and operating it would be even harder if regulations were strict.
Huang was one of the most vocal critics of the chip export ban imposed by former President Joe Biden, and the White House announced on May 12 that it would rescind the rule just days before it was set to take effect.
The idea of restricting countries’ access to American technology is misguided, Huang said. Instead, he said, the goal should be to promote the use of American technology everywhere before it’s too late. “If the goal is for America to lead, the regulation does the opposite,” he said.
Competition should go both ways and American companies should have the opportunity to compete in the Chinese market, offset the trade deficit, generate income for Americans, build, hire and create more jobs.
