On his final tour to the east of the country, Qin Shi Huang traveled with three important figures: Prime Minister Li Si, his close servant Zhao Gao, and the youngest prince Hu Hai. The Emperor himself did not expect that these three would be traitors, creating the scene of the Qin Dynasty's eventual destruction.
The documentary "Mysteries of the Terracotta Warriors" (Netflix, 2024) recreates what happened when Emperor Qin Shi Huang died. Accordingly, Zhao Gao colluded with Li Si to fake a will, decreeing the death of Crown Prince Fu Su (who was made the new emperor by Qin Shi Huang), and installed Hu Hai as the new emperor.
Not long after, Emperor Hu Hai abused his power and committed a horrific massacre against the late Emperor's harem and his own blood brothers. Hundreds of corpses found in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang proved his undeniable crime.
However, the conspirators quickly met tragic ends.
After two years of bloodshed and death, Hu Hai's empire gradually weakened and showed signs of collapse. Meanwhile, Zhao Gao and Li Si turned against each other. Prime Minister Li Si was deceived by Zhao Gao and was later sentenced to death by Emperor Hu Hai.
According to Sima Qian's "Records of the Grand Historian", Li Si was sentenced to five punishments, including having his legs cut off from the waist.
After eliminating Li Si, Zhao Gao aimed for the throne himself. He had his men force Hu Hai to drink poison, plotting to establish a new Emperor.
In the end, Hu Hai was buried without fanfare in a commoner's grave. The reign of Qin Er Shi Huang Di (the second emperor of the Qin Dynasty) lasted only 3 years.
After Emperor Hu Hai died in anger, Zhao Gao plotted to establish a puppet emperor to seize power. But he himself did not expect that the "chess piece" he created to replace Hu Hai also had his own plot.
As soon as Emperor Shang of Qin Ying Ziying ascended the throne, he plotted to kill Zhao Gao and seize the throne. Unfortunately, at that time, the Qin Dynasty was too weak to fight against the powerful armies of the vassal states. The Qin Dynasty collapsed completely just 46 days after Ying Ziying ascended the throne.
Thus, according to historical records and what was found in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, all three masterminds behind the death of Emperor Qin Shi Huang - Hu Hai, Zhao Gao and Li Si all had tragic endings. Despite being royal, Hu Hai's body was not buried in the imperial tomb. The whereabouts of the other two bodies are also unknown.
Unfortunately, the cruel plots of those in power led to the destruction of the once-powerful Qin empire...
