Multiply joy, divide hardship

We visited Mr. Ha Doan's house (Nga Hai village, Khanh Phu commune, Khanh Vinh district) at the end of June. In the new, spacious house that still smelled of lime and mortar, Mr. Ha Doan's family gathered around the dinner table, happiness shining brightly on every face. Showing us around the house, Mr. Ha Doan boasted that the house had a living room, 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and a toilet. "Living in a solid house, I don't have to worry about rain or shine anymore. The happiest thing is that my children have a proper place to study. My wife and I never thought we would have such a beautiful house in our whole life."

Mr. Ha Doan's family is in extremely difficult circumstances. His wife is often sick, his two children are in primary school, and the whole family depends on his wages, which are sometimes available and sometimes not. Therefore, although his parents gave him land to live on, he and his wife only have enough money to build a house with bamboo walls. Understanding this situation, implementing the Humanitarian Month in 2025, the Provincial Red Cross Association mobilized the Provincial Party Committee's Internal Affairs Committee to support 62 million VND to build a house for his family. Together with the family's counterpart fund of 40 million VND, after 2 months of construction, the new house was completed. On the day the new house was handed over, Mr. Ha Doan and his wife were emotional and could only continuously say thank you to everyone. Their happiness was multiplied when the family received many household appliances, equipment and cash from the Provincial Party Committee's Internal Affairs Committee and the Provincial Red Cross Association with a total value of 17 million VND. Mr. Cao Trong - Vice Chairman of Khanh Phu Commune People's Committee said: "The house is a testament to the care and support of all levels and sectors for those in difficult circumstances; it is the result of effective coordination between organizations, agencies and local authorities to care for the people, especially the vulnerable."

Ms. Ngo Thi A Lin (32 years old, in Phu Tho village, Phuoc Dong commune, Nha Trang city) was moved when receiving a health insurance card from the Phuoc Dong commune Red Cross Society. More than 10 years ago, Ms. Lin followed her husband from the West to Nha Trang to live. The family has 4 children, her husband alone worked as a hired worker, so life was very difficult, having to rent a room in many places. Nearly 3 years ago, the whole family moved to Phu Tho village to rent a room. "Not long after returning, the commune Red Cross Society came to visit, gave money, rice, food; especially supported with a health insurance card - something I had never received in other places. The timely support helped my husband and I ease the difficulties and feel warm-hearted", Ms. Lin said.

Tireless steps

Racing against the pouring rain, Ms. Le Thi Hong Mo - President of the Red Cross Association of Vinh Phuoc Ward (Nha Trang City) led us through the small, winding alleys to the residence of Ms. Nguyen Thi Den (82 years old, Residential Group 12 Son Thuy). While quickly walking up the steep stairs clinging to the cliff leading to the house located high up, Ms. Mo called Ms. Den. Hearing the call, Ms. Den smiled toothlessly, her hands instead of her eyes that could not see, groped to find and shake Ms. Mo's hand, then happily chatted. Ms. Mo asked about the food and drinks in the house, gave her many instructions, gave Ms. Den the monthly support money from the association, then took out her wallet and gave her some more personal money.

Nearly 5 years ago, when she first took over the association's work, she saw Ms. Den often wandering around begging for things, so Ms. Mo followed her home. Knowing that Ms. Den lived alone, was blind, and had to rely on her 74-year-old younger brother, Ms. Mo proposed that the association adopt her every month, and the members responded. Every month, the association members deducted from their modest incomes, plus the support of benefactors, to support Ms. Den and 3 other cases. Ms. Mo recalled: "In 2021, I first joined, so I didn't know much about the association's work. But I had a passion for doing mass and volunteer work since I was in school. I kept going from alley to alley, and when I saw a makeshift house, I would rush in to ask and learn, then come back to propose to my superiors for help, or find a way to contact and persuade benefactors to help." Volunteer activities, sharing, and connecting help members have many meaningful experiences.

After 23 years of working in the Red Cross, Ms. Tran Thi Mai - President of the Red Cross Association of Cam Nghia Ward (Cam Ranh City) cannot remember how many benefactors, agencies, units and establishments she has mobilized to promptly support difficult circumstances. She remembers most helping Mr. Huynh To's family (in Cam Nghia Ward) 10 years ago. "His family lives in a dilapidated house, one child died while working at sea, leaving him with 3 mentally ill grandchildren. Feeling sorry for him, whenever there was a humanitarian activity, the association would introduce him to receive gifts. I also ran around looking for a unit to support him in building a house and the Association for the Protection of the Disabled, Poor Patients and Children's Rights mobilized to support the construction. The day I saw Mr. To's whole family happily receiving their new house, I clearly felt the meaning of the association's work."

With a passion for the association's activities, Mr. Nguyen Cung - Chairman of the Phuoc Dong Commune Red Cross Association (Nha Trang City) is always active in mobilizing support for people in difficult circumstances. In 9 years of working with the association, every year he receives a certificate of merit from the Nha Trang City Red Cross Association or the Provincial Red Cross Association. On average, each year he mobilizes support for more than 500 gifts and 1-2 health insurance cards for people in difficult circumstances.

Bridge of hearts

Mr. Phan Dinh Huan - Vice Chairman of the Provincial Red Cross Association said that in the Humanitarian Month of 2025 alone, the Provincial Red Cross Association mobilized nearly 17 billion VND, nearly double that of previous years, of which 7 billion VND was used to support long-term medical examination and treatment activities. Humanitarian charity work has made its mark in both areas: Supporting poor, near-poor households, and those in difficult circumstances and promoting long-term medical examination and treatment for people in difficult circumstances. From the mobilized funds, the provincial Red Cross Associations have coordinated to donate nearly 25,500 gifts, scholarships, medical examinations, 27 houses, and more than 8 tons of goods. The beneficiaries of support are increasingly widespread, from people with meritorious services to the revolution, war invalids, relatives of martyrs who are working, to students, people in difficult and disadvantaged circumstances, etc. The provincial Red Cross Associations also participated in the Million Steps of Charity Campaign in 2025, reaching 80,000km; corresponding to contributing 80 million VND (equivalent to supporting 160 people) to the fund to support people in difficult circumstances launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society.

Not only mobilizing and connecting, the association's officials also deduct personal income to support people in difficult circumstances. Many officials who mobilized support for building houses for ethnic minorities also bought additional rafters for the roof, bags of cement to level the yard, or added roofs... Many association officials have quietly provided monthly support to some difficult cases. These things have contributed to helping the association become a truly reliable address for organizations and individuals to participate in helping and sharing with disadvantaged situations. "Although the mobilization of resources to support the community is still limited due to the small number of association officials and the general economic situation is still difficult, in the journey of connecting kind hearts with difficult lives, we have still connected with kind hearts, including those who are not well-off but are still willing to help those in more difficult circumstances. Those hearts have continued to contribute to spreading humane values in society," said Mr. Huan.

Humanitarian Month 2025 also marked a strong mark when the Provincial Red Cross Association promoted the mobilization of support for long-term medical examination and treatment activities. The Association coordinated with hospitals to organize 4 medical examinations and gifts for 600 poor people, people in difficult circumstances, and officials, members, and volunteers of the Provincial Red Cross Association, worth more than 1.5 billion VND; provided consultation and examination of eye diseases, gifts for 200 people, free eye surgery for 5 people with a total value of 120 million VND; organized 10 first aid training courses for 183 people, worth 95 million VND; mobilized support for bicycles and gifts for people in the two provinces of Dak Lak and Dak Nong worth 60 million VND...
