According to the Shibuya Ward Tourism Association in Tokyo (Japan), from March this year, tourists will have the opportunity to explore "a unique public toilet tour in this city".
The tour's toilets were renovated by the Nippon Foundation and the Shibuya Ward Office from 2018 to 2023 to dispel stereotypes about public toilets, which are often considered "dirty, smelly and dark".
The toilets are designed by famous domestic and foreign architects with the desire to bring visitors a new perspective on the image of Japan.
The design team, including renowned architects Tadao Ando and Kengo Kuma, came up with many creative ideas. For example, the Jingumae public toilet is designed to resemble an old house in Harajuku, or the Yoyogi-Hachiman toilet resembles mushrooms growing in the forest. The Hiroo East Park toilet can change the color of the light according to the hour.
With a tour package of 33 USD/person (nearly 850,000 VND), visitors have the opportunity to experience a colorful journey while freely admiring the different types of public toilets in the "land of cherry blossoms".
The tour will initially consist of two routes. If you take the East route, you will visit eight locations in the eastern part of the ward, including the Jingumae public toilet. Meanwhile, if you take the West route, you will visit nine locations, with the highlight being the Yoyogi-Hachiman public toilet.
All 17 restrooms are wheelchair accessible. They are all located outdoors and maintained to withstand the cold weather. All are cleaned three times a day and inspected monthly to ensure cleanliness and hygiene.
