On August 22, Mr. Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An Ward - Da Nang City, said that he had directed the Department of Economics - Infrastructure and Urban Areas to invite Mister Loo Company to work on the collection of fees for using public toilets.

Previously, on the Da Nang feedback application, a tourist reported that they bought a ticket to visit Hoi An Ancient Town for 120,000 VND, but when using the Mister Loo restroom on Bach Dang Street (Hoi An Ward) on the afternoon of August 13, they were charged 10,000 VND.

Hoi An Ward People's Committee responds to citizens' opinions

It is worth mentioning that this restroom has no posted price list, no receipt, no receipt. Visitors think the fee is too high and question which agency allows such a high public restroom fee?

On August 21, Hoi An Ward People's Committee responded to citizens, saying that it had directed the Department of Culture and Social Affairs to send officers to inspect.

Why is there a 10,000 VND toilet fee in Hoi An?

Mister Loo Company was leased the house at 149 Tran Phu (behind Bach Dang Street) by the People's Committee of Hoi An City (old) to open a public restroom, with a contract from April 1, 2019 to April 1, 2025 (6 years).

In report No. 56/BC-KTHT&DT dated March 13, 2025 of the Department of Economics - Infrastructure and Urban Areas (old) on advising the People's Committee of Hoi An City (old), it was proposed to allow Mister Loo Company to extend the contract for another year.

Currently, Mister Loo Company continues to operate this restroom and has a price list of 10,000 VND/person/time at the cashier counter.

Hoi An Ward People's Committee has directed the Department of Economics - Infrastructure and Urban Areas to invite Mister Loo Company to work on previous agreements with the People's Committee of Hoi An City (old), consider continuing to exploit this toilet and request the company to properly implement the contents committed in the previous contract.

On the morning of August 22, speaking with a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , the leader of the Economic - Infrastructure and Urban Department of Hoi An Ward said that the same morning, Mister Loo Company was invited to work.

Through the records, previously, the old Hoi An People's Committee allowed Mister Loo Company to invest in building public toilets and allowed to collect service fees for Vietnamese people at 5,000 VND/time and foreign visitors at 10,000 VND/time.

The company stated that it had invested a large amount of money, and from 2020-2022, due to the impact of the pandemic, there were few visitors, so the revenue was not enough to cover the investment. Previously, the company requested a 1-year extension and the People's Committee of Hoi An City (old) agreed to extend the extension until April 1, 2026, but only allowed to collect 5,000 VND/person/trip (including Vietnamese and foreigners).

However, in recent months and even before, the company has charged 10,000 VND/trip, regardless of whether it is Vietnamese or foreign guests. Hoi An Ward has requested the company to list the price at 5,000 VND/person/trip according to the agreement that Hoi An City People's Committee had previously approved.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Binh, Secretary of the Hoi An Ward Party Committee, said that in the ancient town of Hoi An, there are currently some free toilets serving tourists. However, in reality, they still do not meet the needs of tourists.

In the coming time, the ward will propose the city to invest funds to renovate, upgrade and build new free public toilets to better serve tourists.
