When visiting Zanzibar, tourists should explore the nature reserves, as each offers a unique glimpse into the island's ecological wonders.

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park
Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is the only national park in Zanzibar, covering an area of approximately 50 km². Established in 1965, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It represents an important ecological area with diverse habitats, including underground forests, coastal forests, grasslands, mangrove forests, and salt marshes.
Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is home to the red colobus monkey, endemic to Zanzibar, and many other endangered species such as the Aders deer, the Zanzibar servaline genet, and the Zanzibar leopard. The park is also a "shared home" for many rare bird species.
Ngezi Forest Reserve
Located in the far northwest of Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago, the Ngezi Forest Reserve is an ecologically important area with dense tropical rainforest. Established in 1959, the reserve covers an area of 1,440 hectares and is the last remaining vestige of the primary forest that once covered Pemba Island.
The reserve encompasses tropical rainforest, riparian forests, and maquis shrubland. It is particularly notable for its fauna, including the endemic Pemba flying fox, the Zanzibar vervet and red colobus, the green deer, Pemba scops, wild boars, and mongooses. The Ngezi Forest is also home to many bird species such as the Hadada ibis, the African hawk, and the Pemba white-backed vulture.
Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve
The Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve, located on the northeastern coast of Unguja, about 20km from the town of Stone, is recognized as an important biodiversity center in the region.
This is home to endemic species such as the red colobus monkey and the Aders deer; 47 species of birds, including many rare ones such as the syke, hornbill, and Zanzibar green sombre... along with other animals such as the green monkey, Sunni antelope, and many species of snakes.
This reserve also boasts over 100 plant species, many of which possess medicinal properties. In addition to its diverse ecosystem, the reserve features coral caves that represent unique geological features, containing stalactites and stalagmites, and serving as a refuge for numerous species of birds and bats.
