Discover the 'secrets' of the world's tallest Buddha statue at Am Tien

On the morning of April 26, in Trieu Son district, Thanh Hoa province,Sun Group held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Am Tien commercial service area and cable car project - the first item in the Am Tien spiritual tourism complex and historical relic called "Am Tien Legend", with a total investment of up to 35,000 billion VND.

Perspective of Am Tien Legend Project

The Am Tien Legend was designed with inspiration from the image of the one-tusked white elephant that Lady Trieu rode into battle - symbolizing strength, intelligence and indomitable spirit, creating a "white spiritual tourist area", with all the constructions in white.

The special highlight of the white spiritual tourism complex is the Great Sun Buddha statue, located on the top of Nua mountain, with a total height of 167.5 m including a 45 m high base, a 13.6 m lotus platform and a 108.9 m high Buddha statue (from the foot to the head of the statue). The height of the big toe alone is 1.67 m, equivalent to the height of an adult. The Buddha statue is expected to set a record for the largest Buddha statue in the world .

The Vairocana Buddha statue is expected to set a record as the world's largest Buddha statue.

Currently, the Great Buddha of China in Yaoshan, China is recognized as the tallest Buddha statue in the world, with a total height of 153 m, of which the statue itself is 108 m high. Thus, just counting the height from the foot to the head of the statue, the Great Sun Buddha statue in Thanh Hoa is 90 cm taller than the statue that holds the world record.

The volume of the statue is up to 69,110.7 m3, expected to far exceed all existing Buddhist structures in Vietnam, such as 21.5 times larger than the Buddha statue of Tay Bo Da Son in Tay Ninh (3,219.3 m3).

White lotus pedestal has patterns simulating lotus patterns of the Later Le Dynasty.

The right hand of the statue makes the Fearless Mudra, 7.470 m wide; the left hand makes the Giving and Giving Mudra, 11.935 m long. The statue of the Great Sun Buddha stands majestically on a white lotus platform 13.6 m high. The patterns on the lotus petals are modeled after the lotus patterns of the Later Le Dynasty. Under the white lotus platform is a 45 m high base, with a white lotus dome. This will be a prayer center and a space for Buddhists and visitors to explore the Buddhist world through 3D mapping performance art.

The statue's exquisite modeling was done under the guidance of sculptor Pham Ba Dua.

The statue was exquisitely modeled by a group of sculptors and hundreds of famous Vietnamese bronze casting artisans, under the guidance of sculptor Pham Ba Dua - who once modeled and sketched the tallest bronze statue of Buddha Tay Bo Da Son in Asia, located on top of Ba Den Mountain (Tay Ninh).

In particular, the statue is crafted from imported red copper plates and processed using high pressure technology from Europe. After completion, the surface of the statue is silver-plated to create an elegant white statue that stands out in the middle of the "white spiritual tourist area" Am Tien. In Buddhist culture, Vairocana Buddha is also the representative of a perfect mind, of a pure white lotus, solemn and serene.

The project is expected to welcome visitors and worshippers at the end of 2027.

In terms of feng shui, the Buddha statue is placed in an extremely favorable position, facing the northeast - where spiritual energy converges at the confluence of the Chu River - Ma River, in the distance is the sacred Yen Tu peak. The statue's back leans against the majestic Ngan Nua mountain, behind it stretches the majestic Truong Son range, creating a "mountain-facing-water" position that generates prosperity for the whole region, bringing abundance and happiness to all the people of Thanh land.

Normally, the construction and completion of large-scale Buddha statues such as the Great Buddha Tathagata, according to experienced statue casters, takes up to 8 years or longer to complete. However, Sun Group Corporation said that the preparation and construction process of the statue at Am Tien was carefully planned and carried out in advance. Therefore, the manufacturing and installation progress will be significantly shortened. It is expected that by the end of 2027, the project will be ready to welcome visitors and worshippers.
