Located more than 20 km southwest of Tuy Hoa city, Phun Gorge, in Hoa My Tay commune, Tay Hoa district, Phu Yen province, was formed by streams from the Ca Pass upstream of the Banh Lai River. The Phu Yen online portal describes this place as a majestic spot with clear blue water and towering cliffs, recently becoming a favorite destination for adventure tourists.
The gorge is about 50 meters deep from the edge of the rocks to the water's surface. When water from upstream cascades down the large rocks below, it creates a powerful force that causes the water to splash back up in a white spray. From a distance, visitors get the impression that the water is being喷 up from the bottom of the gorge.
The road from the city to Phun Gorge is relatively easy to travel by car or motorbike. However, the approximately 2 km stretch from the parking lot to the edge of the gorge is difficult, requiring navigating a rough stream, navigating numerous stacked rocks, and crossing a large lake.
Luu Ba Phuoc, 28, from Phu Yen, explored Phun Gorge with a group of friends from Ho Chi Minh City at the end of June. Phuoc said he had been to the gorge many times and often brought his friends there "because Phun Gorge is still quite pristine and has many interesting things to experience," he said.
The amount of water flowing from upstream is not constant and depends on rainfall, so it's not always possible to explore Phun Gorge. The best time is from January to August. The weather in Phu Yen during this season is not very rainy, making travel convenient. Around June, the lakes in the gorge fill up, allowing visitors to comfortably paddleboard.
The geyser area is still quite pristine and has not been fully developed for tourism. Visitors participating in water activities here must wear life jackets and follow local guides to avoid accidents, Phuoc emphasized.
At Phun Gorge, there are tiered pools of water nestled between rocks, surrounded by dense forest. Visiting in the summer, tourists feel like they've wandered into a small forest with a cool stream. "The hotter the summer, the more you can appreciate the cool, refreshing water," Phuoc said.
Tam Ngo (in white shirt), 30 years old, from Ho Chi Minh City, and her friends explored Phun Gorge this time, saying they really enjoyed the scenery here. "Phu Yen is hot and sunny, but being able to immerse yourself in the cool, clear water when you arrive is wonderful," Tam said. Besides SUP paddling, visitors can organize picnics, barbecues, and trek around the nearby forests. After the experience, visitors are reminded to take their trash to the designated collection point.
To reach the gorge, visitors must hike in the hot weather, carry heavy loads, wade through rivers, and climb rocks, so Phuoc emphasized that the destination is not for those with weak physical fitness or those traveling alone. Visitors should go with a guide or hire a local guide to ensure safety.
