After taking time off to give birth to her second child, Thu Quynh officially returned to the small screen with the role of Lien in the movie My father stayed behind. However, this role is becoming the focus of criticism from the audience because of the excessive "screaming" and "eye-rolling".
In the film, Thu Quynh plays Lien - the biological mother of Nguyen (Tran Nghia) - a woman who abandoned her son for 10 years, now suddenly returns and wants to control her son's life as she wishes. Right from the first episodes, Lien made the audience uncomfortable with her selfish, conservative and domineering personality.
The climax was in episode 36, when Nguyen did not come to dinner with Thao - the girl Lien "chosen" to be her daughter-in-law. Feeling humiliated, Lien went crazy, rushed straight to her son's house, yelled, scolded and even raised her voice to "discipline" Thao in an agitated state. Thu Quynh's intense acting, constantly rolling her eyes and screaming loudly immediately reminded many people of the role of My "wolf" in Quynh Doll in 2018.
On film forums, audiences commented: “Is Lien turning on My 'wolf' mode?”, “I'm so frustrated with Lien!”, “Every time she appears, I know there will be a tiring screaming match”, “With the current plot, screaming and anger like that is unnecessary, it's tiring to watch”, “Building a mother is so hateful”, “Every time she's not satisfied, she goes crazy”… Many people think that the way Lien's character expresses her emotions is "overdone", making the audience feel disgusted instead of sympathetic.
In the face of mixed reactions, Thu Quynh affirmed that she had anticipated that the character Lien would not be well-liked by viewers. “ I always want my character to be ‘lovable and hateful’. Even if she is hated, it is still a success, because the role has touched the viewers’ emotions,” the actress shared.
She also revealed that Lien is a role that brings her a lot of negative emotions, completely different from herself in real life. However, the actress still accepted the challenge to fully convey the character's inner tragedy.
“Lien brings me a lot of fear, but I have to live with the character to express exactly what the writer and director want,” Thu Quynh added. She also hinted that in the final episodes, Lien's character will have a big change, smiling for the first time after a series of tragic days.
Thu Quynh was born in 1988, affirming her acting ability through many films: Scent of Magnolia, Living with Mother-in-law, Quynh Doll, Come Home, Flavor of Love, The War Without Borders...
Beautiful and talented, Thu Quynh has a rather bumpy love life. The actress first married her colleague - actor Chi Nhan - in 2014. However, after only 1 year of living together, they broke up in a noisy way. She raised her young son and tried to affirm her talent in acting. After 9 years since giving birth to her first son, the actress was able to enjoy the joy of welcoming her little angel into the world. Currently, she is satisfied with her life as a single mother.
