On March 7, 2025, in Nha Trang City, the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa Province and the Thien Tam Foundation ( Vingroup Group) officially announced the implementation of a pilot project for the development of high-tech marine aquaculture in Khanh Hoa.
According to the plan, the pilot program, which will run until 2029, will focus on sea areas within two ranges: 3 nautical miles and from 3 to 6 nautical miles.
Within a sea area up to 3 nautical miles, the pilot area for high-tech marine aquaculture development reached 240 hectares, with a production of over 3,600 tons.
In the sea area between 3 and 6 nautical miles, the pilot area for developing high-tech marine aquaculture reached 200 hectares, with a production of over 5,100 tons.
The project outlines six tasks: Developing broodstock for high-tech marine aquaculture; developing commercial aquaculture technology; environmental monitoring, proactive disease prevention and control, and adaptation to climate change; marine aquaculture logistics services; product preservation and consumption; and converting marine aquaculture technology up to 3 nautical miles.
In addition, the plan also outlines policies to support the development of marine aquaculture, solutions regarding science and technology, international cooperation and environmental protection, and solutions regarding human resources, etc.
The project was implemented with funding and coordination from the Thien Tam Foundation (Vingroup Group), which introduced technology to fishermen.
The high-tech marine farming model was implemented in practice from May 2023 with 10 households participating in raising lobsters and marine fish using HDPE cages, equipped with underwater surveillance cameras and GPS systems in the open sea area of Cam Lap commune (Cam Ranh city).
By June 2024, this pilot model had concluded with 10 participating households harvesting and achieving higher profits compared to traditional wooden cage farming.
Specifically, the profit margin for cobia farming households reached 172% compared to households farming on the same scale using traditional wooden cages, for lobster farming households it reached 112%, and for grouper farming households it reached 131.4%.
In addition, new farming technologies also protect the farming environment, minimize risks from natural disasters, beautify the landscape, and can be combined with the development of ecotourism…
