On October 29, PetroVietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) held the inauguration ceremony of a special oil and gas industrial project: 1MMTPA Thi Vai LNG Warehouse at Cai Mep Industrial Park (Phu My town, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province). Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang attended the ceremony.
Construction started in October 2019 with a total investment of more than 300 million USD. After 4 years of construction, on a land area of nearly 5 hectares, the LNG project considered to be the largest and most modern in Vietnam today has appeared.
The "heart" of the project is the LNG (liquefied natural gas) tank with a height of over 50m and an outer diameter of 82m, with a storage capacity of 180,000m3, reaching an average warehouse capacity of 1 million tons of LNG/year (expected to increase capacity to 3 million tons of LNG/year in phase 2), while meeting strict international standards . In addition, the project also has a port that can receive LNG carriers with a capacity of up to 100,000 DWT.
According to PV GAS, the LNG 1 MMTPA Thi Vai Warehouse project fully meets domestic and international standards and regulations, as well as operational safety requirements.
The in-depth assessment process highly appreciated the project for its detail, compatibility, and tightness between the operational stages. As a result, the process of receiving the first LNG train to Vietnam and the trial run were both completed earlier than expected and absolutely safe.
The operation of the LNG 1 MMTPA Thi Vai Warehouse and the port warehouse system is of great value in providing regasification gas, ensuring industrial customers and new power plant projects according to the "National Energy Master Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050" approved by the Prime Minister.
This is not only the first LNG infrastructure in Vietnam, but also a typical example of realizing the transformation of the national energy industry. To date, PV GAS is the first and only enterprise in Vietnam to be granted a Certificate of eligibility for LNG export and import traders by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, marking a new development step in the field of gas and gas products trading.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang said that the completion and operation of the project will contribute significantly to the successful implementation of the Party and Government's policies on orientation and planning for overall national energy development. It will officially put Vietnam on the global LNG map and mark an important step in the process of transitioning to a green, clean and sustainable energy source.
In the coming time, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang requested the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group and its member units to continue to accelerate the progress of putting the LNG Thi Vai gas-electric chain into synchronous operation; upgrade the capacity of the LNG Thi Vai warehouse project to 3 million tons/year as approved planning as well as accelerate investment in other key projects such as LNG Son My.
