A handsome face and bright, aspirational eyes are the first impressions we had when we met Trieu Van Thanh. He was born in 2014, Dao ethnic group, the youngest of two siblings.
Not only is his family poor, Thanh also has a difficult situation. His mother left when he was 4 years old, and Thanh and his sister lived with their father, grandmother and aunt. Perhaps that is why he learned to be independent early on, from eating, sleeping, personal activities to studying and a sense of responsibility to help his family.
Regarding studying, he always shows a spirit of self-discipline. In addition to focusing on studying well in class, he also takes advantage of every moment at home to review his lessons and complete the assignments given by his teacher. Ms. Duong Thi Huong, Thanh's homeroom teacher from grades 3 to 5, commented: In class, I often call him "skinny" Thanh because he is short compared to his age. He listens very attentively to lectures, perceives and absorbs quickly, is enthusiastic about speaking up to build lessons and is always proactive in asking teachers about content he does not understand.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Ha, Principal of Cong Son Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, commented: He is a student with special circumstances but his academic achievements are outstanding compared to his classmates. Although he is still young, he has shown that he is independent, has the will and determination to succeed. In the past school years, he has been an excellent and exemplary student, has good conduct, and has the title of Uncle Ho's good child. He was also selected to participate in and won many high prizes in school-level competitions and awards.
Visiting Thanh right when he was preparing to enter the new school year, we felt his excitement. His desk was neatly arranged, his books and notebooks were carefully prepared for the first year of transition.
Thanh shared: In the past school years, I have received a lot of attention and encouragement from teachers at school, especially my homeroom teacher. I always tell myself to strive to study well, overcome my circumstances to become a useful person for society in the future. This year, I am in 6th grade, I am very excited to wait for the first day of school, I will continue to try to study well this school year.
"My dream is to become a police officer in the future to protect the peaceful life of the people" - Thanh confided.
The school drums are ringing loudly to welcome the new school year 2025 - 2026, students are excitedly going to school in joy. Joining in that atmosphere, Thanh is wearing traditional ethnic clothes, carrying a backpack, smiling on his way to school. This year, Thanh is the older brother of the elementary school students, looking older and more mature than the "skinny" Thanh that the previous homeroom teacher used to call him.
We left Cong Son on a foggy road, with green forests on both sides. I felt the new vitality here and secretly hoped that Thanh and the young generation here would always be full of dreams and desires to change their homeland, strive to study well to achieve their dreams in the future, and later contribute to building a changing and developing homeland, with a prosperous and happy family life.
