When the hat is too big for the head

Báo Bình PhướcBáo Bình Phước02/06/2023

Students nowadays who get an 8 are considered… failures, especially elementary school students. For middle school and high school students, that number is 7. That’s why, appearing in newspapers, media, social networks, or anywhere, it is very rare to see students who are not… excellent students.

Before 2000 or in advancededucation systems, it was very difficult to find students with excellent or good results, very few classes, few schools had a rate of over 10%. The rest were mostly good or average students. Even being classified as good was an honor. Now, the same number, the same rate, the only difference is that good or excellent students make up the majority and very few good or average students.

Some parents are very happy with their children's scores, some teachers are happy with the results their students have achieved. However, that is a part, not all. Anyone who is truly passionate about education feels uneasy about that.

Looking back at the education program over the years, most of the reforms were considered “regression”, each time there was a change, the program was criticized as too heavy. The previous education program was considered quite simple, within reach, but it was very difficult for students to get a score of 9 or 10. If any subject had an average score of over 8 points, they were considered superstars and were selected for the excellent student competition teams… And an average score of over 8 points for all subjects in a school year was extremely rare, mostly in the top 6 or 7… And the more famous the school was for its high quality education, the more selective and high-quality the class, the more difficult it was to get a high score.

The current education program, experts, teachers, parents all complain because it is too heavy, beyond the capacity of students, the requirements are high, the requirements are more and more comprehensive and everyone wants to reduce the load. However, the scores are the opposite of before, mainly 10 points, 9 points, very rare 6 points, 7 points, 8 points.

With such flawless scores, is it because students nowadays are better at studying? Many teachers have shared the pressure, for them, many times it is not because of the work on the podium, because the students are not good, but because the school board does not accept having poor students, students who are held back, if students study poorly, it is the fault of the teachers, not the students... Especially, when considering academic records as a method of university admission, this pressure is even greater. Therefore, in many schools, many places, high school and grade 12 students have a 100% rate of good and excellent students.

That is the abnormality in the current education system. That abnormality has been creating a huge invisible insecurity. First is the insecurity with society, when trust in schools and the education sector is shaken violently. Insecurity with the people who score those scores, if they are real and dedicated teachers. For parents, those beautiful scores do not make them feel satisfied, instead they worry about not knowing their children's real abilities. And like other areas of life, for many students, those excellent scores do not bring them pride, and for many they even feel ashamed when wearing a hat that is too big for them.
