When young people in Da Lat get involved in tourism.

Recently, tourists visiting Da Lat (Lam Dong province), especially young people, often seek out cafes with beautiful views to admire the pristine pine forests and hills. Some beautifully designed cafes, combining flower gardens, lakes, and traditional stone and wooden architecture of the mountain town, have a special appeal.

During the 2026 Lunar New Year, the outdoor cafe located on Tran Quang Dieu Street (leading to Bao Dai Palace) became a "phenomenon" with its simple tables and chairs, wooden walkways set under a patch of old pine forest, and the rather Western-sounding name "Air Dream Forest Station." Situated within the grounds of the villa at 16 Hung Vuong (rear side), it was always crowded with customers from morning to night.

The owner of the cafe cleverly repurposed discarded passenger vans as a reception counter. Besides enjoying coffee, customers can take a stroll on the wooden deck and pose under the shade of the old pine trees. In the context of the declining number of old pine trees in the city center, this short stretch of road has become the most beautiful in Da Lat. Tourists enjoy taking photos and posing under the pines in the afternoon when the golden sunlight shines through the branches, reflecting off Bao Dai's Palace, creating mesmerizing green spaces.

Having heard from friends about some quirky cloud-watching cafes in the suburbs that are attracting tourists, we decided to visit the "Nomadic Region" or "Ancient Town of the Lost" cafe located in the Da Chien hill area (as it's called by locals, about 10km from Da Lat market) on a recent weekend morning.

On a not-very-high hill, covering an area of about 2 hectares, are five charming wooden houses surrounded by flower gardens, ornamental plants, a pond, and winding stone or wooden pathways. Thanks to good care, the flower gardens are in full bloom, creating vibrant floral spaces that stand out against the surrounding landscape. Sitting in these familiar wooden houses reminiscent of Da Lat more than half a century ago, visitors can look towards Trai Mat and Xuan Tho to take in the view of greenhouses growing vegetables and flowers, or the natural landscape with rolling green pine hills. Guests can enjoy coffee in the open-air, uncovered wooden lounge area while admiring the small, attractively designed flowerbeds. The highlight is the two small ponds, which not only create a scenic environment but also provide a spot for female visitors to paddle boats and pose for photos, along with the mini flowerbeds.

When we left this coffee shop at 10:30 AM, tour buses were still arriving in droves, proving its popularity. The shop opens at 5 AM to welcome visitors who come to see the clouds and combine it with breakfast and coffee. Visitors only have to pay 100,000 VND for entry, but they are served a cup of coffee (or a bottle of water) and a simple breakfast (Da Lat style steamed pork bun) or a grilled skewer.

Promoting the heritage of landscapes and architecture.

Talking to Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quan Quy (38 years old, owner of the coffee shop and a native of Da Lat), we learned that the "Nomadic Region" coffee shop has been around since 2021 under the name "Smoke Valley." In 2023, Mr. Quy bought it and invested in upgrades. Taking inspiration from the past, the shop features rustic pine wood houses – after the wood is sawn into planks, they are left unsmooth and assembled into houses with many glass windows to let in light during foggy or rainy days. Combined with the pristine surrounding landscape, this creates a unique attraction for tourists.

Taking us on a tour, Mr. Quy showed us where a 1,000-seat gong performance stage would be built, consisting of four wooden grandstands, with a rustic gong stage in the center, and performers being K'ho ethnic groups from the foothills of Lang Biang mountain. The stage is expected to be completed and operational by this summer.

Leaving Lac Hu Ancient Town, we followed National Highway 20 for a few more kilometers before turning onto National Highway 27C (formerly Provincial Road 723), arriving at the Memory Station. Perched on a gently sloping hill, the approximately 2-hectare grounds feature rustic stone houses with walls built from rough stone blocks (not split stone) and red tile roofs, constructed in the style of Da Lat villas with protruding chimneys. The doors and pillars are also made of rough, rustic pine wood, evoking the wild, unspoiled character of the highlands. Between the two buildings are flowerbeds displaying vibrant colors, harmoniously designed beside a crescent-shaped lake and a small canal with clear blue water. Looking northwest, visitors can see the green pine trees of the Than Tho Lake scenic area. Most impressive is the approximately 30-meter stretch of railway track, reminiscent of the golden age of Da Lat's railways… The Memory Station is also owned by Green Hill Company, headed by Mr. Quy.

After graduating from the Finance and Banking Faculty (Van Hien University), Mr. Quy opened a digital camera shop on 3-2 Street. In 2019, he switched to the tourism service industry. Recognizing the booming trend of young tourists checking in on social media, he decided to open a company providing photo-worthy cafes and cloud-watching spots. His life experience and refined sensibilities, stemming from his upbringing in Da Lat, inspired him to boldly find suitable locations, lease land, and design beautiful, captivating photo-worthy cafes for tourists.

Before parting ways, the Director of Green Hill stated that they are researching and expanding their market to Phan Thiet to continue providing tourists with ideal stopover and check-in locations.

It is encouraging that young people are seeking out scenic spots with beautiful locations to admire the characteristic hilly landscapes and ancient pine trees of the mountain town, harmoniously integrated with traditional architecture in Da Lat. This demonstrates that the essence of nature and the urban architectural heritage of Da Lat are attracting the attention and affection of young people.
