Perhaps it is because this book series resonates with the commonalities of most modern people that it has achieved success beyond the borders of Japan.

This book series is being reprinted at a time when many people are seeking gentle works that can comfort them amidst life's many anxieties.

"In a certain city, there's a strange legend about a special chair in a café. Simply by sitting in that chair, and for a limited time, one can travel to any point in the past they desire. But this miracle comes with troublesome rules."

With just a few descriptive lines, Toshikazu Kawaguchi has opened up a fantastical, ethereal space between dreams and reality.

A place that fulfills the age-old longing of many: to relive, once again, things that have forever slipped away like water through one's fingers.

Toshikazu Kawaguchi, a director, producer, and screenwriter, probably never imagined the immense success of his adaptation of one of his own plays. This play won the grand prize at the 10th Suginami Theatre Festival.

Since the novel was published, Toshikazu Kawaguchi has written five more volumes, forming a six-volume set.

Tre Publishing House has just released three volumes: When the coffee cup is still warm (translated by Bao Chuong), When the lie is still not revealed (translated by Khue Tu), When memories are still not faded (translated by Bao Chuong). The remaining three volumes (When the farewell is still unspoken, When love is still not forgotten, When love is still unexpressed ) are expected to be released as soon as possible.

According to The New York Times, as of 2024, the book series While the Coffee Is Still Cold had sold over 6 million copies and been translated into 46 languages.

The success of the book series contributed to the formation of a literary trend among Asian authors, with Japan and South Korea being prime examples, in developing a genre of soothing literature. This genre, in turn, gained favor with readers in the American market, a market that is not particularly receptive to works not written in English.

The characters in Toshikazu Kawaguchi's works are just ordinary people, lost in the hustle and bustle of the world. His stories lack dramatic tension, but this is compensated by sincerity and simplicity. Perhaps it is precisely this sincerity and straightforwardness that makes his works so beloved by readers.
