Children do not yet have fully developed emotional control. It is completely natural for them to crave a new toy and express their frustration through tears when it is not given.
When parents respond by spanking, they inadvertently teach their children that violence is the way to solve problems when they feel angry or helpless.
Instead of spanking your child at the supermarket, parents should crouch down to eye level with their child and calmly but firmly explain why they can’t buy a toy right now. When children understand that their feelings are respected, but boundaries are consistently maintained, they will gradually learn to control their impulses.
Additionally, parents should discuss the purpose of the trip and specific expectations with their children before going to the supermarket. If the child understands from the beginning that the trip does not include buying a toy, the likelihood of a tantrum will be significantly reduced. In case the child starts to cry, parents can redirect the child's attention or suggest alternatives, such as putting the toy on the list for an upcoming birthday.
Parents’ reactions in public not only affect their children, but also reflect on the family’sparenting style. Controlling your own emotions and teaching your children how to handle negative emotions calmly will help build a positive parent-child relationship and teach them important life skills they will use throughout their lives.
