That night, sitting in the car from the cinema in Hanoi to his hometown in Ninh Binh, he still cried. He shared: "The film has artistically and emotionally recreated the ancient citadel soldiers in the heroic and sacrificial war. Surely my comrades who have died in the ancient citadel will also feel warm in their hearts."

In the battle to protect Quang Tri Citadel , Mr. Hoi’s battalion alone lost about 1,000 men. With an area of about 25 hectares, Quang Tri Citadel had to endure 328 tons of bombs and bullets; more than 4,000 officers and soldiers, most of whom were very young, heroically fell.

Considered the fiercest battle of the 20th century, the heroic battle to defend Quang Tri Citadel in 1972 is a heroic epic of the nation's history and has become a sacred source of inspiration for artists. Writer Chu Lai, who was a soldier who directly held a gun in the resistance war against the US to save the country, more than anyone else, he deeply felt the fierceness of war and the sacrifices of his comrades. With a passion for the theme of revolutionary war, many of his works have successfully left their mark on the public.

According to writer Chu Lai, “Red Rain” is an exception in his writing career. He often writes from short stories to novels, from novels to films, then from films to reformed opera, plays..., but “Red Rain” was written by him in the form of a film script in 2010 - that is, 6 years before the novel of the same name was published. After a long time of perfecting the script, the film “Red Rain” produced by the People's Army Cinema is a large-scale art project, invested in thoroughly, from content to technique. The preparation process for film production took many years. Elaborate scenes were built in Quang Tri province, in which the main scene was filmed along the historic Thach Han River. The ancient citadel was realistically recreated in terms of architectural form, battlefield terrain, trenches, tunnels, surgical stations, field airports, defensive fortifications...

Along with that, to ensure the quality requirements of a historical war film, the carefully selected cast has undergone many months of training, military training, martial arts, and familiarization with the field to have the most realistic and emotional scenes. A special thing in "Red Rain" that greatly contributes to the success of a war film is that the filming scenes require the participation of many vehicles, weapons, and military equipment. Almost all the scenes in the film were filmed on set. Producer Nguyen Tri Vien, General Director of the film production, said that these are things that only the People's Army Cinema with the direction of the Ministry of National Defense , support, and coordination of agencies and units in the Army can do.

Director Dang Thai Huyen shared that during the 81 days and nights of filming the film, the crew had to overcome many difficulties and challenges due to harsh weather, storms, floods, and continuous cold rain. The scenes had to meet high technical and safety requirements, but everyone was determined to make this meaningful film. "We consider this a stick of incense to pay tribute to the heroes and martyrs who died to protect the Fatherland. We hope that the audience who go to the cinema to watch the film will feel the dedication of the entire crew and the messages from the film," said the female director.

“Red Rain” was released to audiences nationwide on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The film immediately received attention, support, and high appreciation from experts and the public nationwide. This is one of the few, and can even be considered the most successful film in terms of content, ideology, and art of Vietnamese cinema when recreating the theme of revolutionary war. Doctor, critical theorist Ha Thanh Van commented: “If the content of the film helps “Red Rain” recreate heroic historical pages, then the art of cinema is the soul, the method of transmission that makes the film come alive, touching the hearts of today's audience. In the film, we can clearly see the style of Dang Thai Huyen, a female director who always perseveres with the humanistic and lyrical spirit in every frame and has now brought it into a large-scale war film.” Accordingly, the female director lets the characters appear as fates, not as dry symbols, so that the audience can clearly see that the soldier fighting outside the trenches is still a son, a lover, a friend. The soldier characters on the other side are not just one-dimensional depictions, but they appear as people with thoughts, feelings and beliefs. This way of telling both inherits the tradition of revolutionary cinema and brings a contemporary breath, rich in humanity.

Author and writer Chu Lai said, “Without the Blood Rain Citadel, there would be no blue sky today, without the Blood Symphony, there would be no poetic peace like today.” The film is both a visual history lesson and a cinematic monument commemorating those who fell for the Fatherland. Through the art of cinema, “Red Rain” has turned a heroic historical event into a “collective memory”, helping today’s generation understand more about the loss and sacrifice of our ancestors and the pricelessness of peace. Through that, the film deeply inspires patriotism, the spirit of fighting to protect the Fatherland, the desire for peace of the Vietnamese people and the desire to contribute of today’s generation.
