In order to provide research foundations, the books “Cinema as a Technique” by Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Ngoc Thanh and “Sociology of Film” by Associate Professor, Dr. Phung Ngoc Kien have just been introduced to the public.
“Cinema as Technique” by Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Ngoc Thanh (former Principal of the University of Theatre and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City), focuses on examining cinematic techniques - one of the core elements that make up this art form. The author also provides a large system of classic film examples of world cinema and also in Vietnam for analysis.
The book consists of five chapters: "Cinematic techniques and related issues," "Cinematic techniques viewed from film drama, narrative and storytelling," "Cinematic techniques and expressive values," "Cinematic techniques viewed from the four main filmmaking techniques," and "Cinematic techniques as a comprehensive system of expression methods and typological relationships."
The work was honored at the 2024 Golden Kite Awards in the category of Film Theory and Criticism Research.

The book "Sociology of Cinema" by Associate Professor, Doctor Phung Ngoc Kien (lecturer of Cinema and Popular Arts, Faculty of Literature, Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities) delves into the interpretation through 6 chapters: "General sociology of cinema," "Cinema as a synthesis of social relations," "Cinema in social relations," "Social institutions in cinema activities," "Cinema is a world of symbols about reality" and "Cinema in the world of cinema."
The author closely follows the flow of this art form from past to present to give objective and incisive analysis.
Experts commented that the two books are two necessary works of film research, both expressing the writer's dedication and helping to guide readers and learners on the journey of research and practice to acquire knowledge.
Researcher, Master Hoang Da Vu (Deputy Director of the Institute of Theater and Cinema, Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema) assessed that these are all valuable documents, systematized monographs, facilitating research.
Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Cam Giang (Head of the Department of Art Studies, Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities) commented that besides researchers, the works can also be very useful and are necessary scientific tools for audiences who are passionate about cinema./.
