Promoting the role of the elderly in preserving traditional culture

Mr. Luc Van Huong teaches gong playing techniques to the young generation.

Roc Ram village, Yen Tho commune is not only a land that still preserves many traditional cultural values of the Thai ethnic group, but this place is also famous for the Kin Chieng Booc May festival - a typical festival of the Thai ethnic group. According to artisan Luc Van Huong, over time, the festival was forgotten. He and some villagers had to make great efforts to collect and research to find the origin and form of the festival, so the festival was restored and later recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Born and raised in the ancient Muong Ca Da land, since childhood, Mr. Cao Bang Nghia has been "immersed" in the traditional cultural space of the Thai people. He especially loves and is passionate about the "yeu du nam ne" khâp verses; the melodious and nostalgic sound of the pí flute; the sound of the quach lang, the sound of gongs, the sound of cymbals bustling in the mountains and forests; or the "flying" and "gliding" strokes of ancient Thai script; the humanistic lessons through each folk song and proverb...

Faced with the reality of the gradual decline of Thai ethnic culture, he advised the local government to open two Thai language classes for officials and people to participate. He applied Thai folk songs and proverbs into his lectures so that students could easily absorb them. From the classes founded by Mr. Nghia, he laid the "foundation" to promote the movement of learning Thai script in Quan Hoa district to develop strongly. Up to now, he has taught ancient Thai script to 220 people, Khen Be to 8 people, Khen Be for funerals to 5 people, Khen Be for 7 people and bamboo flute to 20 children in the neighborhood. Along with that, he advised the local Party Committee and government to open classes to foster knowledge of preserving Thai ethnic folk culture for grassroots cultural officials; established the Khen Be Muong Ca Da Club with 45 members, with him as Chairman. In addition, he also collected historical artifacts related to the cultural and spiritual life of the Thai ethnic group in Quan Hoa district and participated in the exhibition of 990 years of Thanh Hoa's name.

In addition to Mr. Luc Van Huong and Mr. Cao Bang Nghia, in the mountainous area of Thanh Hoa, there are hundreds of elderly people participating in preserving traditional cultural values. Thanks to their knowledge, dedication and responsibility, they have been making efforts every day to preserve and pass on the quintessence of traditional culture of the nation to the next generation.
