Promoting the experience of the elderly in early action and disaster response

DNO - In the context of natural disasters occurring with high frequency, great intensity and unpredictability, promoting the experience, understanding and role of the elderly is important in early action, response and management of natural disaster risks.

That was emphasized by Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, Head of the Committee for Promoting the Role of the Elderly under the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly at the conference to guide and train on community-based disaster risk management and enhance early action in disaster management for association officials in Da Nang city on October 15.

The conference was organized by the Central Association in coordination with the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), and the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Da Nang city.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Chinh, the role of the elderly in the community-based disaster risk management model is to pass on experience and lead the community in disaster prevention and control.

Therefore, all levels of the association need to promote the experience, knowledge and role of the elderly in warning, early action, and response to natural disasters; build disaster risk maps, deploy disaster prevention and response activities as well as play an exemplary role and bridge between the government and the people; educate and teach the younger generation about warning and response experiences in natural disasters...

Associations at all levels need to strengthen propaganda about the important role of the elderly in disaster risk management; enhance the combination of the elderly's experience with modern scientific knowledge; build a core network of elderly people at the grassroots level, and participate in the disaster prevention force.

Along with that, sharing the model "Elderly people for a safe community", encouraging the development of intergenerational models, replicating advanced examples, and strengthening international cooperation...

At the conference, senior citizens' association officials from localities in Da Nang city were instructed on digital tools in warning and responding to natural disasters.

Including instructions on using the "Disaster Prevention" tool in the Da Nang Smart City application; instructions on implementing activities to integrate the elderly in disaster prevention and control and replicating the intergenerational self-help club model; first aid for the elderly in emergency situations...
