On the evening of October 1, Iran launched a massive missile attack on Israeli territory. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack and said it was carried out in response to Israel's recent activities in southern Lebanon, its attacks on the Gaza Strip, and the assassination of the Hezbollah leader.
During the attack on Israel, the Iranian military launched ballistic missiles and hypersonic missiles that penetrated Israel's air defense system and hit their targets. According to Iran, up to 80% of the missiles were not intercepted and hit their targets; but according to other preliminary estimates, Iron Dome and Israeli aircraft only failed to intercept about 40% of the targets.
Iran informed the US and Russia of its intentions before attacking Israel. None of the attacks were carried out on civilian targets.
Israel suffered at least two airstrikes. Air raid sirens sounded across Israel. Residents were told to stay in shelters. About an hour later, Israel announced that the attack was over, so residents could leave their shelters until further notice.
Initial reports suggested that Iran launched around 200 missiles but in reality the attack was much larger and according to preliminary estimates, as many as 400-500 missiles were used in the attack.
Explosions were heard across the country. The Israeli military admitted there were "several attacks in the central and southern parts of the country".
The night sky of October 1st was lit up by rockets.
Iran stressed that it had only attacked military facilities and gas rigs of the Israel Defense Forces, so there would be few civilian casualties. Israel's Health Ministry reported that there were no casualties from the missiles fired at the country, except for some minor injuries from shrapnel.
Mr Biden has ordered the Pentagon to assist Israel in “protective measures”. According to Al-Jazeera, US air defences intercepted Iranian missiles from the Ayn al-Asad military base in western Iraq. Shortly afterwards, there were reports of rocket attacks on the US Ayn al-Asad military base in Iraq.
Several Iranian missiles were shot down over Jordanian territory.
The extent of the damage and the exact target of the Iranian attack are still unclear. According to preliminary reports, Israeli oil rigs were attacked in the Mediterranean Sea. According to local reports, there were attacks on military bases, airports, etc. Air defense system launchers were also attacked.
Iranian media claims that 20 F-35 fighter jets were destroyed in supersonic missile attacks on an Israeli airbase.
Several Iranian missiles are said to have hit the Netzarim area in the Gaza Strip, “destroying a large number” of Israeli tanks.
Tel Aviv has vowed to retaliate, while Iran has said it is ready for any escalation. Israel's retaliatory strike is likely to come in the near future, possibly today or tomorrow night. The targets could be Iranian energy infrastructure.
