Construction of Thermal Power Plant worth nearly 30,000 billion VND started in Can Tho

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the morning of August 19, at O Mon Power Center (Can Tho city), Vietnam National Industry and Energy Group (Petrovietnam - PVN) started construction of O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant project.

This event is part of a series of groundbreaking and inauguration events for 250 typical projects across the country, broadcast live at 34 locations, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Chairman of the Board of Members of Petrovietnam Le Manh Hung said: The O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant Project was assigned by the Government to Petrovietnam as the investor in June 2023, is a key project in the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 (referred to as Power Plan VIII) and is a component project of the Block B Gas - Power Project Chain.

This is a project chain including many component projects (upstream development projects, pipeline projects and downstream power plant projects), with the participation of many investors (from foreign partners from Japan and Thailand such as MOECO, PTTEP, Marubeni to Vietnamese investors such as Petrovietnam, PVEP, PVGas, EVNGENCO2, WTO) and the investment scale of the entire project chain is up to nearly 12 billion USD and is expected to contribute to the state budget revenue of up to about 30 billion USD.

Perspective of O Mon power center

Total investment over 29,000 billion VND

With a total investment of over VND29,900 billion, after commercial operation, O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant will increase Petrovietnam's total power generation capacity to over 9,300 MW, accounting for about 10% of the total power generation capacity of the entire national power system.

The timely implementation of the O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant project, in sync with the progress of the Block B Gas Power Project Chain, not only ensures the overall efficiency of the Project Chain but also contributes to ensuring national energy security and economic development of the Mekong Delta region in general, especially Can Tho city. In addition, the project implementation also contributes to realizing Vietnam's net emission reduction target.

On behalf of the contractors, Mr. Yeoning Jung - Vice President of Doosan Enerbility Group pledged to work closely with the contractors to ensure the construction of O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant is of the highest quality and on schedule.

Contributing 6,400 billion VND/year in industrial production value to Can Tho

Appreciating the efforts of Petrovietnam and other parties in preparing for the groundbreaking ceremony of O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant today, Mr. Tran Van Lau, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Committee, said that when the O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant project comes into operation, it will generate about 7 billion kWh/year to the national grid, contributing about 6,400 billion VND/year to the industrial production value of Can Tho City.

Given the importance of the project, Mr. Tran Van Lau assigned the Can Tho Department of Industry and Trade to be the focal point to receive recommendations from all parties to promptly resolve arising difficulties, support investors and contractors so that the project can generate electricity on schedule, effectively contributing to the socio-economic development of Can Tho city and the Mekong Delta region.

On behalf of the Ministry of Finance, Deputy Minister Le Tan Can requested the investor Petrovietnam and the EPC Contractor Consortium to focus all resources to immediately and synchronously implement the important tasks of the project, ensuring the completion of the project according to the commitments on quality, safety and progress. At the same time, the Central Ministries, Can Tho City People's Committee, and local authorities should direct and promptly support the resolution of difficulties of the investor and contractors during the project implementation process.

At this groundbreaking ceremony, Petrovietnam leaders and Can Tho city leaders exchanged comprehensive cooperation agreements and Petrovietnam presented a symbolic plaque of 5 billion VND in social security to Can Tho city.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Phong Tho Primary and Secondary Boarding School took place in Phong Tho Commune (Lai Chau Province) with the contribution of Petrovietnam.

Also on the morning of August 19, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Phong Tho Primary and Secondary Boarding School took place in Phong Tho Commune (Lai Chau Province). This is an educational project of special significance, contributing to improving the quality of teaching and learning for children in remote, isolated and border areas. With "full of affection" and high responsibility to the community and society, Petrovietnam has accompanied the project with a support of 100 billion VND, contributing to the realization of this dedicated school.
