Vu Thao My and Thu Minh have just won the first season of Our Song Vietnam. She shared with Giao Thong Newspaper about her journey to conquer this new milestone, 11 years after winning the Voice of Vietnam 2013.
We will keep trying.
How different did Vũ Thảo My and Thu Minh feel when they received the Our Song Vietnam championship title compared to 11 years ago, when she won The Voice Vietnam 2013?
When I received the Our Song Vietnam championship award alongside Thu Minh, I had mixed feelings. I was surprised, amazed, happy, and a little confused. That feeling was also very different from 11 years ago.
Thu Minh and Vu Thao My were the winners of the first season of Our Song Vietnam.
Back then, I was too young, so everything felt strange. Now that I'm more mature, I feel calmer and appreciate things more. Sharing the stage with Thu Minh, someone I've always respected, makes me feel more confident. That's the result of our shared efforts.
Mid-year, she released her debut album, and the year ended with her winning first place. Do you think this is currently the peak of your career?
I wouldn't dare make a definitive statement. But looking back at 2024, I see that I worked incredibly hard, and all of those achievements were significant milestones.
I know this is just one step forward, and there are still many challenges to overcome. I'm sure I'll have to try harder, constantly improving and developing myself.
How do you feel when you have a good singing voice, a launching pad from a prestigious competition, and support from many senior artists, but it took you 11 years for your career to break through?
Everyone has their own moment to shine, when their energy and personality have matured enough or they are unique enough in their own way. Every success has its price. I don't regret having to wait. This time is completely different from when I was 16.
Vu Thao My was the winner of The Voice Vietnam 2013, mentored by singer Dam Vinh Hung.
Our Song Vietnam was a competition where I had to try incredibly hard, overcoming not only professional challenges but also my own limits. There were days when I practiced day and night, recording until 8 am the next morning, sleeping only 2-3 hours each day. My body was sometimes completely exhausted, feeling like I was working unconsciously. Even so, I persevered, little by little, to get through each stage.
At 16, I was fortunate enough to win the championship more easily. But now that I'm an adult, I truly understand that to achieve success, one must pay the price with perseverance and relentless effort.
What has held you back over the past 11 years?
Everything happens for a reason. At 27, having matured and experienced many setbacks, I truly understand what I need and want on my artistic journey. My at 27 is definitely more mature and experienced than My at 16.
Honestly, when I was 16, I didn't even know what I wanted to eat each day, let alone define my career path (laughs). But those years helped me learn, accumulate experience, and grow. Now, I can confidently pursue what is meaningful to me.
I want to try my hand at many different genres.
During those 11 years, did you ever doubt your choice?
Very few people are able to clearly define their direction in life when they are young. I was no exception; I struggled during my youth. I believe that's perfectly normal. Without setbacks, it would be difficult for us to grow and change. Looking back now, I am grateful for the valuable lessons I learned during those years.
Vu Thao My performed a duet with singer Thu Minh in the first season of Our Song Vietnam.
As a child, I was recognized for my talent, but at times I became complacent. A lack of direction and experience slowed me down in unlocking my full potential. As I grew older, I realized that talent is a precious gift, and I shouldn't waste it.
In recent years, I've become more aware of my responsibility to my music . I've become more determined to learn, improve, and build a concrete career plan. For me, music is not just a choice, but has become the clearest answer to my purpose in life and my passion.
Is that why she wasn't afraid to experiment with different styles and abilities such as performing and producing in the bilingual album "1.0" and on game shows?
What I've shown in the album "1.0" or on game shows and stages is part of my journey of self- discovery and musical exploration . But I don't want to stop there.
In the future, I want to try my hand at more genres, including styles I've never experienced before. I believe art is limitless, and expanding my musical repertoire will help me continuously grow and bring something new to the audience.
Times are changing very rapidly, and if I didn't make an effort to change myself, learn, and grow, I might have been left behind.
Spending billions of dong on a music video doesn't guarantee success.
Yet, when the Vietnamese music market is a battle of multi-million dollar music videos, why doesn't she appear to be a formidable competitor in this race?
In the art world, everyone wants to invest in high-quality music videos for themselves and their audience. However, investing in a product requires careful planning. High costs don't always guarantee success.

A high-quality music video isn't just judged by the amount of money the artist spends; it depends on many other factors, from creative ideas and execution to the emotions the artist conveys. Most importantly, it's the quality of the music itself that truly touches the audience's hearts.
She doesn't have many high-budget music videos, nor many albums. Is it true that she's the type of singer who's always busy performing shows?
Performing shows to earn money is good, as long as you don't forget to release products regularly to connect with your audience. Each artist has their own way of developing their career. For me, balancing performing on stage and investing in music is important.
It's not always the case that only multi-million dollar music videos or albums are the only way to grow; maintaining a presence in the hearts of fans through shows, music, and other activities is also crucial.
However, for the past 11 years, she hasn't had a solo live show. For a singer with a good voice and resources like My, isn't that something worth discussing?
Every artist has their own goals and plans. Currently, if you ask me about doing a solo live show, the answer is no. I feel I still have a lot to improve and perfect.
A live show is a big step and not a goal I'm aiming for right now. At each stage of my career, I have my own priorities and decisions. Currently, I'm focusing on developing my music and skills. When I feel ready, I'll consider organizing a live show.
Thank you!
