After 7 investment phases, the volume of cargo through Can Gio International Transit Port could reach 16.9 million TEUs by 2047. The port is expected to contribute VND34,000 - 40,000 billion to the budget each year when operating at full capacity. Can Gio Bridge is still waiting for planning

In the past two years, the dream project of the people of Can Gio island district in particular and the people of Ho Chi Minh City in general, Can Gio bridge, has continuously received positive signs towards the official commencement date. Notably, the information that Can Gio bridge has adjusted its design to help Ho Chi Minh City save nearly 2,000 billion VND has further raised the hope that with a reasonable capital plan, the project will have more favorable conditions.

According to the HCM City Department of Transport, the architectural plan for Cau Gio Bridge approved by the City People's Committee in 2019 is a single-tower cable-stayed bridge (230 m high) with the idea of sketching the image of a typical mangrove tree in Can Gio. After a period of research, the city's transport agencies realized that this plan revealed many economic and technical limitations.

In terms of cost, the one-tower option is estimated to cost about VND1,962 billion more than the two-tower option and the construction time is also expected to be longer. With the above limitations, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has decided to approve the proposal to change the design from a one-tower cable-stayed bridge to a two-tower cable-stayed bridge. The new option still retains the mangrove architecture and ensures a 55-meter navigation clearance. This adjustment has received the consensus of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, creating favorable conditions for the next steps of the project. Currently, the total investment of Can Gio Bridge after the design change is VND10,569 billion, implemented in the form of public-private partnership (PPP), BOT contract. The City Department of Transport also aims to start construction of Can Gio Bridge on April 30, 2025, and complete it in 2028.

However, the HCM City Department of Transport said that Can Gio Bridge has not yet been shown in the adjusted master plan for Can Gio District and the zoning plans in Nha Be District.

Therefore, up to now, the project has not been approved by the competent authority. The City People's Committee has assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to urgently complete the dossier and speed up the appraisal and approval of the planning adjustment to 2040 and the vision to 2060. The Department also needs to review and propose a list and detailed progress plan for relevant agencies in adjusting the 1/2,000 scale zoning plans and technical infrastructure and urban transport sectors to complete the legal basis for the Can Gio bridge project. Currently, the Department of Transport has proposed that the City People's Committee assign this unit and localities to adjust the related planning projects.

Can Gio Bridge is the project at the top of the list of key projects in the district's transport network development plan for the period 2023 - 2030 that the Can Gio District People's Committee is researching and completing. In particular, whether the "dream" of Can Gio International Transit Port can become a reality or not, largely depends on the speed of forming the road network connecting to the port. In particular, Can Gio Bridge is the project that is considered the most urgent.

VNA quoted information from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport sending it to the Tien Giang Province Department of Transport to get opinions on a report proposing a plan to exploit this transport route.

According to the proposed plan, the expected location to open the Can Gio wharf is in Long Hoa commune, the existing Dong Hoa wharf area, on the Ha Thanh-Dong Hoa river near the Soai Rap river mouth.

The head of the Go Cong Dong wharf is in Vam Lang town, Go Cong Dong district. Currently, the head of the Can Gio and Go Cong Dong wharfs is being updated in the general planning of Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang province.

This ferry route has a distance of 12 km, the ferry travel time is about 30 minutes. It is expected that there will be at least 4 trips/day each way, operating from 6am to 6pm daily. The type of ferry used has a minimum load of 100 tons, carrying capacity of at least 100 passengers, 50 motorbikes and 10 cars.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, after the Can Gio-Vam Lang ferry route is in place, people from My Tho city and Go Cong town (Tien Giang) going to Can Gio will shorten the distance and reduce travel time compared to traveling by road in the current Can Gio-Can Giuoc ferry direction.
