Recommend people to reduce density and control aquaculture areas

Việt NamViệt Nam11/08/2024

Faced with unstable lobster prices and high mortality rates due to high farming density, shrimp farmers in Phu Yen province have proactively reduced the number of cages and restricted the release of shrimp larvae. Local authorities are also looking for solutions to control cages and rafts according to planning and improve the aquaculture environment.

Song Cau Town has the largest number of lobster cages and rafts in the province at present. According to actual counting results, the whole town has over 3,000 rafts with nearly 130,000 lobster cages. However, recently, the situation of lobsters dying during the farming process has continuously occurred, causing the loss rate of the number of shrimp raised in cages and rafts of the people to increase from 30-50%.

According to Mr. Pham Van Phai in Xuan Thanh commune, many households have not complied with environmental protection regulations when raising lobsters. The food for lobsters is stagnant in the cages, leading to water pollution. This is the main cause of the mass death of lobsters in recent times. Therefore, the authorities need to strictly control the process of raising lobsters, and at the same time, hand over the water surface to the people to manage to raise awareness of protecting the farming area.

Not only is the quantity of lobsters reduced during the farming process, but the current market price of lobsters has also decreased, causing difficulties for lobster farmers. If every year the price of flower lobsters is from 1.8-2 million VND/kg, it has now decreased to 1.2 million VND/kg. And green lobsters, which used to cost about 1 million VND/kg, have now decreased to 750,000-800,000 VND/kg. Commercial lobster farmers have limited their stocking, and lobster breeders have also reduced the number of hatcheries in cages and rafts.

An Hoa Hai Commune (Tuy An District) is currently the largest lobster breeding area in Phu Yen Province with an average of 8,000 cages and rafts each year. However, this year, the number of cages and rafts has decreased to about 2,400 cages. People have proactively reduced the number of cages and rafts because the input of juveniles is difficult and the output is unstable.

Phu Yen province has just started to count the number of aquaculture cages and rafts in localities to carry out management and arrangement work in accordance with aquaculture planning. As of June 2024, the whole province has over 186,000 aquaculture cages, 3.8 times higher than the number of cages planned for aquaculture in the province. Therefore, the provincial authorities recommend that people reduce aquaculture density in the current situation.

Ms. Le Thi Hang Nga, Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Fisheries, said: Aquaculture areas in localities such as Song Cau Town and Dong Hoa Town have high density. In addition, the price of lobster seeds is high, while the selling price of commercial lobsters is not stable, depending heavily on the foreign market. Therefore, lobster farmers need to be careful in stocking, avoiding the situation of too high density, when encountering unfavorable weather conditions, it will lead to shrimp death, causing great damage.
