Although there have been some positive signs of sedimentation at Cua Dai beach, overall it is necessary to continue to urgently implement systematic projects to sustainably restore this beach.
In recent years, the situation of sea erosion in Hoi An has been developing rapidly, increasing in level every year. From 2013 to now, the sea has eroded and spread 5 - 6km to the northwest and inland in some places more than 60m.
Along the entire Hoi An coastline, there have been 10 coastal protection projects funded by the state budget and 7 coastal protection projects implemented by enterprises. Through the survey, only the slope revetment with concrete structures or concrete piles, the tray base with buy pipes, and the base of the boulders reinforced since 2014 are basically stable, while other solutions are damaged, subsided and the sea is still eroding strongly.
At a working session with the Office of the National Committee for Incident Response, Natural Disasters and Search and Rescue when the inspection team conducted a survey of Cua Dai beach recently, Mr. Nguyen The Hung - Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee said that due to the lack of a comprehensive solution and limited funding, the implementation of anti-erosion measures at Cua Dai beach was carried out with too many solutions.
In addition, patchwork, experimental, and unsynchronized investment has led to the landslide spreading rapidly to the northwest, and eating deep into the mainland, especially in areas that have not been protected by embankments.
Currently, there are 3 projects to prevent erosion of Cua Dai beach with large funding sources that have not been implemented. Of which, the project to prevent erosion and sustainably protect the Hoi An coast with a total investment of 42 million euros, expected to be implemented from 2024, is expected to sustainably regenerate the Hoi An coast.
In addition to the projects to be implemented above, experts also have a number of proposals to "rescue" Cua Dai beach, such as: temporary soft embankments to maintain the shore, limit landslides during the rainy and stormy season with a length of about 1.5km; pumping sand to regenerate the shore combined with welding groynes perpendicular to the shore...
The sand pumping project is expected to achieve two goals: quickly regenerating the shore and beach, and at the same time clearing the shipping lanes in and out of Cua Dai. However, according to Mr. Nguyen The Hung, it is necessary to carefully assess the sand reserves at the "sand island" in Cua Dai and assess the environmental impact if this sand source is used in the southern coastal area, Cu Lao Cham as well as the downstream area of the Thu Bon River.
In addition, if the “sand island” is not replenished annually, there will be no longer a source of sand to periodically pump to regenerate and maintain the beach. Therefore, more comprehensive and thorough assessments and surveys from experts are needed.
