Economic breakthrough, modern structure
During the period 2020-2025, despite the impact of global and domestic economic fluctuations, and especially the COVID-19 pandemic, Thai Nguyen province maintained positive growth momentum. The average GRDP growth rate for 2021-2025 reached approximately 7.3% per year, exceeding the set target.
By 2025, the province's GRDP is estimated to reach 202,925 trillion VND, 1.6 times higher than in 2020, placing Thai Nguyen in the group of provinces with a relatively high average growth rate nationwide.
One of Thai Nguyen's outstanding achievements is the process of shifting its economic structure towards modernization and sustainability. Industry and construction currently account for over 60% of the GRDP; the service sector accounts for approximately 25%; and the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sector maintains a level above 10%.
The industrial sector continues to be the main driver of growth, particularly with the outstanding contribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises, notably Samsung Group and its ecosystem of satellite businesses.
During the period 2020-2025, Thai Nguyen's agriculture will be restructured towards commodity production, application of high technology, and development of ecological agriculture linked to value chains.
The province has shifted strongly from "agricultural production" to "agricultural economy," focusing on high technology, digital transformation, and enhancing the value of key agricultural products. Tea cultivation is a prime example: with nearly 24,000 hectares (after mergers), accounting for 22% of the country's total tea area, over 45% of which is cultivated according to VietGAP, organic, and high-tech standards. In 2024 alone, the value of the tea industry reached approximately 13,800 billion VND.
The service and trade sector has seen many positive changes, with synchronized investment in logistics infrastructure, e-commerce, and modern retail systems, thereby improving consumer quality and increasing the competitiveness of the domestic market.
Attracting investment: a lever for sustainable development.

Thai Nguyen is currently among the leading localities nationwide in attracting investment in the northern midland and mountainous region.
During the period 2021-2025, total social investment is estimated at 374 trillion VND, with FDI accounting for a large proportion and maintaining stable growth. By 2025, the province will have nearly 200 active FDI projects with a total registered capital of over 10 billion USD, mainly in the fields of electronics industry, supporting industries, high technology, and manufacturing.
The industrial park and cluster system is planned to be modern and expanding in a green, smart, and connected direction. Industrial parks such as Yen Binh, Song Cong I, II, and Diem Thuy are becoming a driving force for the development of the northern industrial region.
Along with attracting investment, Thai Nguyen focuses on improving the business environment and enhancing the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI). The province is accelerating the shortening of administrative procedure processing times, building an e-government system, and digitizing investment licensing processes, thereby creating favorable conditions for businesses to operate and expand production.
Economic development and investment attraction are inseparable from infrastructure. During the past term, Thai Nguyen has effectively mobilized resources to invest in building a synchronous, modern, and highly interconnected socio-economic infrastructure system.
Transportation infrastructure has been prioritized, with many strategic routes completed, such as the Thai Nguyen - Bac Giang - Vinh Phuc route and the Ring Road V of the Hanoi Capital Region, opening up new development opportunities, strengthening economic connectivity, and reducing logistics costs. In Bac Kan (before the merger), many key projects were implemented, such as the Bac Kan - Ba Be Lake route connecting Na Hang (Tuyen Quang), and the new National Highway 3 section from Cho Moi to Bac Kan.
These projects enhance regional connectivity while also providing impetus for the development of tourism, trade, and services.
Urban infrastructure and industrial zones continue to expand and modernize. Thai Nguyen aims to develop into a smart city, a green city, and an economic, scientific, and educational center of the midland region.
Green growth linked to digital transformation
Thai Nguyen province is proactively shifting from extensive to intensive growth, with science and technology and innovation as key drivers. The province is decisively implementing digital transformation solutions, building a digital government, a digital society, and especially a digital economy, creating a foundation for sustainable development.
In addition, Thai Nguyen is implementing a green growth plan for the period 2021-2030, prioritizing clean technology projects and environmentally friendly production in industrial zones.
Digital transformation in industrial production helps businesses improve productivity, optimize costs, and reduce emissions. Green economy and circular economy are also integrated into industrial park development planning, contributing to resource conservation and environmental protection.
Thai Nguyen has implemented a comprehensive set of solutions for socio-economic development, coupled with organizational restructuring and leveraging post-merger potential. In the coming period, the province aims to further promote administrative reform, improve planning quality, attract selective investment; sustainably develop key economic sectors; encourage entrepreneurship and innovation; and simultaneously form dynamic economic zones oriented towards green growth and comprehensive digital transformation.
Facing new opportunities, Thai Nguyen aims for economic growth of 10.5% or higher in 2025 and subsequent years.
With a groundbreaking strategy in investment, digital transformation, green economy, and administrative reform, the province is determined to create a favorable environment for businesses. Beyond being a high-tech industrial center, Thai Nguyen aims to become a model of modern, sustainable, and digitized growth.
