In an announcement on June 11, Nintendo said it had sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles after 4 days on the shelves. This is a new record in the history of Nintendo as well as other home consoles.
Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research and Insights at Niko Partners, noted that the Switch 2 is “the best-selling home console of all time.” This shows that the Switch 2 is off to a strong start and has generated a lot of interest.
For comparison, it took Sony 16 days to sell 2.1 million PS4s, and six weeks to sell 4.2 million. With the PS5, the Japanese company took seven weeks to sell 4.4 million units amid the pandemic and a shortage of chips. Meanwhile, the original Nintendo Switch recorded sales of 2.7 million units after a month on the shelves.
According to The Verge , Switch 2 is not in short supply in major markets, while user demand for upgrades is very high. If supply is improved, device sales can increase sharply in the future.
On June 5, gamers in many places around the world lined up early to hope to own Switch 2. This is the successor to the first generation Switch, the product that opened the trend of "hybrid" game consoles, which can be plugged into a TV at home or played on mobile devices.
In the US, the device quickly sold out at many major retailers, but there were still units left on the day of release for those willing to queue at midnight. It was also the fourth best-selling console in the UK, according to data from NielsenIQ .
Previously, analysts had been optimistic about Switch 2 sales, despite the number of exclusive games in the first phase not being as high as expected.
According to Bloomberg , the Switch 2 hits shelves at a crucial time for the video game industry, potentially impacting competitors and game development companies for years to come.
After a successful launch, Nintendo is under pressure to maintain its current sales pace. Uncertainty over tariffs and competing consoles could also impact Switch 2 sales. The company had previously set a target of selling 15 million units by March 2026.

“There’s not much room for Nintendo to make a mistake at this stage. The big issue right now is the high price, but that’s not too important in the first year when loyal fans want to get their hands on a Switch 2 early.
“The pressure is likely to force companies to reduce production costs to reduce selling prices, and tariffs could complicate things further,” said analyst Amir Anvarzadeh from Asymmetric Advisors Pte.
Nintendo’s other challenge is meeting surging demand. The Switch 2 is largely manufactured in China by partners like Foxconn, which could put the company in trouble if US-China trade tensions escalate.
In Japan, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa apologized to customers who were unable to buy the Switch 2 in the lottery. The company asked its partners to speed up production and cooperated with some e-commerce platforms to reduce profiteering by sellers.
The Switch 2's predecessor hit shelves in 2017, selling 17.79 million units in 13 months, beating Nintendo's forecast. Eight years later, the original Switch has sold more than 150 million units, nearly surpassing the DS to become Nintendo's best-selling console of all time.
